Episode 4.7 of “The Big Bang Theory” aired on Thursday, Nov. 4 and was called “The Apology Insufficiency.”
The intro. to the episode revealed that Howard had been awarded a spot on a new research team, but in order to be a part of it, he had to go through an FBI background check. That background check involved the FBI interviewing people that knew him best to determine if he was all right to be on the project.
The interviews started with Raj, as the guest starring FBI agent (played by Eliza Dushku) showed up at his apartment to talk about Howard. Unfortunately, as you know, Raj has a very difficult time talking to women, and that became a very funny problem that he had to deal with on the spur of the moment. Out of alcohol, he was forced to down a bunch of rum cake in order to get the self confidence to talk to her. His biggest fear was being deported if he gave the wrong answers though.
Special Agent Angela Page went on to interview both Sheldon and Leonard as well, with Leonard experimenting with his new approach of speaking to women by pretending that he could exude confidence. It was obviously uncomfortable for her character, especially when she revealed that she had a husband and was wearing a wedding ring that Leonard couldn’t see without his glasses on.
Sheldon was the last person to receive the questions, but he had trouble believing that she was really who she said she was. Proving he had a membership card to the “Justice League” but noting he didn’t know “Batman.” Sheldon went off on a tangent about things that Howard had done to Sheldon over the years, but accidentally let slip that Howard had crashed the Mars rover, something that took place in one of the prior episodes of the show. They were able to hide it quite well, and this was the first time that someone in an official capacity had learned about it.
After the interviews of his friends, Howard was not given the spot on the project, and he immediately became bitter about the missed opportunity. Sheldon knew it was his fault alone though, and started feeling pretty guilty about it in private. While trying to fix things with the FBI in regard to Howard, Sheldon just made things worse.
In other areas of the show, Penny returned to the show as a bartender, a nice trick by the writers to hide the broken leg that actress Kaley Cuoco is still trying to recover from. In her one scene, she gave sage advice to Sheldon on how he could try and fix the situation with Howard. The way he ended up being able to do it was to give Howard his spot on the couch, the one thing that Sheldon cared about most in the world. It worked, and Howard forgave him.
