The Central Delaware Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) is located in southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Encompassing over 96,000 acres, this wine region produces Chardonnay, Riesling and Vidal Blanc wines, among others. It grows both vitis vinifera grapes(the Common Grape Vine, native to central Europe), and vitis labrusca grapes (the Fox Grape, native to the eastern United States), as well as fruits such as cranberries and Concord grapes for specialty wines. The Delaware Valley AVA was approved in 1984.
Briar Valley Vineyards . You’ll find these Central Delaware Valley vineyards and winery at the foot of the Allegheny Mountains in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Its location on a southeastern slope gives its vineyard the perfect climate for growing Chardonnay, Riesling, Lemberger and other wine grapes. Sand Castle Winery. Located in the historic Bucks County, Pennsylvania, this winery specializes in vinifera grapes (native to Europe), which have the ideal growing conditions in the rocky soil of the banks of the Delaware River. All of the wines created at this Central Delaware Valley winery are from their own grapes. Try their Johannisberg Riesling 2004, a lovely white wine with aromas of pineapple and melon, followed by flavors of tangerine and tropical fruits. Their 2006 Pinot Noir is also outstanding, a red burgundy aged in French Oak. It has aromas that include rose petals, and flavors of strawberries and black cherries. Valenzano Winery. This New Jersey winery and its vineyards produce some outstanding wines from grapes, cranberries and other fruits. (The Pine Barrens, where this winery is located, is home to one of the largest cranberry producing areas in the world.) This winery’s handmade, award winning wines include Cynthiana, Merlot and Chardonnay. For a fun, non-traditional wine, try their Shamong Red, which is made from locally grown Concord grapes, a nice red wine which is not overly dry or tannic.
