Brackish is a type of water which has less salt in its water than in sea water. Brackish is comprised of both seawater and fresh water as well. And it can be found in areas where lakes and rivers meet the ocean.
Brackish water can not be used as drinking water because tons of organisms which carry diseases thrive best in this type of water environment. If you were to drink it, you would become very sick. This makes perfect sense since brackish water has a lower salinity than regular sea water. The saltiness of the sea water helps to eliminate these organisms. Brackish water usually takes on a brownish murky color.
Swamps are made up of brackish water. An example of a type of swamp is the Mangrove swamps. Theses swamps acts as a buffer which helps to separate the sea water from the brackish water. One type of fish which lives in Mangroves is the mudskipper. Mudskippers hunt for their food on land.
Estuaries are a type of brackish water where rivers meet the sea. When oceans back flow into estuaries; the water chemical makeup can harm sea life which inhabits them. And it can cause them to die. Some examples of estuaries are the Thames River in London, the Amazon River, and the Delaware Bay River.
There are many different types of animals which inhabit brackish water. The catfish is just one type of fish that lives in this type of water. Some other sea animals which inhabit brackish water are crabs, shrimps, and clams.
You would be surprised to know that most of the fish that you purchase from the pet store comes from brackish water. These fish that you put in your aquarium are of course, not edible. You can also find different varieties of plants in brackish water.
The Atlantic salmon farms are located in estuaries. This becomes problematic when these fish are exposed to high numbers of parasites such as sea lice. It is safe to say that it isn’t safe to eat any seafood which has been farmed in one of these estuary farms. If the seafood catches sea lice and then people eat it, it can be passed along people.
On a scale of how the different waters rate in their salinity sea water has the highest level of salt content. Salt water has on average 3.5% salt which is equal to 35 parts per 1000. And then brackish water has less salt than sea water. And finally fresh water has no salt.
