Currently the ban on the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy” has been lifted. It is currently a policy that you can’t be openly homosexual and serve in the military. Admission of homosexuality is cause for immediate discharge. Recruiters, however, are not allowed to ask whether or not anyone who wants to enlist in the military is homosexual.
The American government and the military will keep going back and forth on this policy until the military becomes comfortable with their own sexuality. This has to be the only reason they do not want homosexuals in the military.
Are we not in the 21st century? Are we not at a point in time that teaches acceptance and equality? Why is okay for the military to openly discriminate upon people because of their sexual orientation bit is illegal for everyone else?
Homosexuals have been around for years. However, now they were never open about their sexual orientation because of fear of discrimination. People who have openly admitted to being homosexual have been beaten and even sometimes killed. This is because of people’s fear of the unknown. A belief that they are going to be hit on by someone who is homosexual, they don’t think about the fact that people only hit on people that they find attractive. If someone sees that you are not interested they generally back off.
Why is it okay for a heterosexual couple to be in the military and be openly in a relationship but not okay for a homosexual person not to be him or herself? Public displays of affection are always uncomfortable no whether the couple is homosexual or heterosexual. As long as anyone does not display affection publicly anyone should be able to be themselves and be in a relationship with any one of the choosing.
There will come a day where homosexuals will be able to openly be themselves without the fear of retribution. Not so long ago, it was not okay to be black in America even after “The Emancipation Proclamation” there was still slavery. It will take a courageous individual like another Rosa Parks who will pave the way for homosexuals the way she did for minorities. Hopefully that day will come sometime soon because the treatment of homosexuals in this country (which is supposed to be a free country) is completely unfair. This nation supposedly takes pride in being a country of freedom. As it stands, we are only free be who we are to a certain extent.
The battle will continue until both sides become can come to a compromise of some sort.
