There are a multitude of apps available for the iPhone. I have had my phone now for over a year and have tried many. There is (almost) no greater joy than finding some awesome new free app. I realize many people have had their iPhones a lot longer than me, but I want to share my favorite five free apps for those of you considering plunging into the world of Apple. The one issue required to make this list is that it is free, because I am too cheap to spend much money on apps right now!
This may qualify as cheating but it is free to download the app, so I count it. The Netflix app requires that you have a paid membership for Netflix to use it. But in this day and age, many people already have one. If you don’t have a membership, get one. Once you have one, make this the first app you download! The sheer number of TV shows and movies available for instant views is amazing. And soon, they could be in the palm of your hand. I feel a devilish laugh every time I think about this glorious app.
The Facebook app is another brilliant app. You get to view your friends’ statuses on a really nice home screen. You can update your own from the same screen. Click your menu button though and it all opens up to you. You can see friend requests, emails, and photos. There is even a chat function.
I know I have made no qualms about my love for comics and have mentioned this app several times. But I just love it. There are so many different free comics available. Pay issues are, at most, $2.99. This is great! I lent my phone to one of the kids, normally a big no no around here, I assure you. But for ten minutes, he was happy and had figured the whole program out. Gotta be careful, though, or he will secretly download many more issues to my phone. I wouldn’t mind, but the wife would kill me!
Several ebook readers are now available for the iPhone. I know many will choose one of the others, but I have spent the most time with iBooks. It’s great. The collection of books may not be as big as the Kindle Apps. However, I love the look of this app. The books are arranged on a shelf, and are waiting on you to “pick them up.” If you want to buy books, spin the shelf around and you get into the book store. It’s as easy to use as any other Apple Store. Like all of the other apps, there are free selections too. I found one of my favorite books for free, which was great because my copy was lost years ago, and then I had to buy it as part of a set of eight books because it is so old.
Labyrinth is a great free game on the iPhone. Granted, it’s the “lite” version. However, I have yet to finish all the levels. It’s a really simple game. You tilt your phone one way or the other, and try to steer a metal ball through a wooden maze. Yes, it’s just like the little game kids used to play. But now, you get different games all in the same “package,” and better yet it’s frees. I know there are other games out there, but this is just simple enough for me to pick up in a minute and play whenever I need mindless entertainment.
I realize there are a lot of other free apps out there. I would love to hear what you all think would be good ones to try out too.
