It all happened so spontaneously. And there just isn’t enough spontaneity in life.
Thinking I was going to end my summer drinking away the thoughts of responsibilities that so often emerge in the month of September, I was pleasantly surprised when my friend Mr. Zimmerman (no relation to Robert Zimmerman) spoke the words that I never thought I’d hear before: “I’m spotting you a ticket to The Lips.”
Everything else is history. But I’m going to let you have a taste anyway.
Of course, on this night of all nights, Mother Nature decided to be a jealous bitch. (I’m guessing she was off creating earthquakes and mudslides somewhere and couldn’t be present for this fantabulous evening. And that’s exhausting, so no hard feelings.) But out of sheer envy, she made a pit-stop in Philadelphia and decided to give us our version of a hurricane. (No, really. And to top it off, the weather was excellent beforehand.)
(But yet another reason why I love The Lips,) lead vocalist Wayne Coyne made sure to inform us that unfortunately the band may not be able to grace us for a whole set.
We only heard eight songs. But it was easily the best live show I’ve ever seen.
The Flaming Lips came out in full gear after a wonderful introduction from Explosions in the Sky, at Festival Pier in Philadelphia.
The Lips played old favorites like “Bad Days,” “Race for the Prize,” “Vein of Stars,” “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” and “Fight Test,” as well as new hits like “Silver Trembling Hands” and “Convinced of the Hex.” Hearing these new songs before Embryonic‘s release was quite a treat, an immediately I knew the album was going to be hit. “Silver” in particular was probably my favorite track on the album, and it was incredible live.
Even though their show was cut short by the maddening rain, their set still contained plenty of enticing visuals- lights, balloons, costumers, streamers- and of course… Wayne in a bubble.
My only complaint was that there was no refund for the tickets, which was completely Live Nation’s fault.
