A new farmer’s market is having its grand opening in Boerum hill on Sunday, October 17th and will be running every Sunday from 11am to 5 pm hence forth. Currently scheduled through to the end of December, The Food Shed, as it is called, is slated to be operating all throughout the year in The Commons, a community center at 388 Atlantic Ave between Hoyt and Bond streets.
Free and open to the public, the market features fresh fruits, vegetables, and bread as well as dairy products, jams, honey, sauces, grains, juices, ciders, and even wine/beer. It is covered and so will be able to operate rain or shine.
Still in it’s early stages of development, the long term goal of the market is to “create information displays to accompany vendor booths that describe the journey the food has traveled, the way it was grown, and how it was prepared.”
And so the market hopes to become much more than simply a place for local foodies to buy fresh, good food. “We hope to illuminate the true value of food with this market and inspire Brooklynites to keep moving towards a more just and sustainable food system.”
We have a feeling these guys will be around for a while and we look forward to participating in the community that they help develop and educate.
