The Foolish Frog Restaurant is located at 846 Sea Island Parkway (Highway 21) in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. My husband and I rode by The Foolish Frog several times during at stay at St. Helena Island and we finally couldn’t resist giving it a try for dinner. It is about a 15-20 minute ride from downtown Beaufort, South Carolina. The Foolish Frog Restaurant is on the right-hand side of Sea Island Parkway on the way to the beach.
The Foolish Frog serves lunch from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, and dinner from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. Eat in the dining room or you can do take out. The Foolish Frog is green, and not just because of the ‘frog’. The building used to be the Frogmore Post Office and has been recycled into a unique restaurant featuring local seafood. Frogmore Stew is a big seller.
At The Foolish Frog you can start your meal with a beer or glass of wine and move on to an appetizer of BBQ Shrimp for $6.99 or a lump crab meat cocktail for $9.99. Dinner Entrées include BBQ chicken, ribs, shrimp or pork ranging in price from $12.99 to $18.99. They have ½ pound hamburgers for $10.99 or an 11 ounce New York Strip Steak for $21.99.
My eyes went right to the seafood choices. Peel and Eat Jumbo Local Shrimp run $19.99 a pound. Their Frogmore Stew is $21.99. Those were the entrées we ordered. Check their menu – click here -for more dinner and lunch choices. They also have a kids menu.
My Peel and Eat Shrimp (see photo above), which came with two sides. I chose a baked potato and talked the waitress into a salad in place of the second side. I love peel and eat shrimp when they are hot, and these were fresh and hot. The sweet tea wasn’t quite sweet enough but it was a large glass and free refills. If you like your tea real sweet, add some more sugar. Needless to say I shared a few shrimp!
My husband hesitantly ordered the Frogmore Stew. After one bit he said it was the right choice! Frogmore Stew has potato, corn on the cob, shrimp and andouille sausage. It was served with crusty bread. The Frogmore Stew was a hit with my husband. He said it was delicious and he would order it again. It was visually appealing (see photo above). He is now a fan of Frogmore Stew, which is a very popular menu item in most restaurants in the Low Country. To learn more about Frogmore Stew – click here.
We were stuffed at that point and declined any sweet treats, although they all sounded really good, maybe next time! I almost forgot to mention our server, Jordan, who was very cheerful and upbeat even though she didn’t feel well.
The Foolish Frog isn’t fancy, but the food was fantastic. This restaurant has been open since October 28, 2009. The Foolish Frog is small. I would suggest getting there early or make a reservation. Shorts, t-shirts and flip flops are appropriate! Sit back and enjoy the free entertainment on Tuesday nights. Have some Frogmore Stew, shrimp or oysters. If you have room left after all that food, try one of their special desserts.
The Foolish Frog Restaurant, St. Helena, South Carolina is fairly new, yet they seem to have it all together. Give it a try the next time you can’t decide where to have dinner.
PS: We liked it so much we went back two days later!
