Christmas trees are the most widely used Christmas decorations around the world. Originally started in Germany in the 16th century to represent the acceptance of Christianity and using the tree as a sign of accepting the Christian faith.
Originated in the early 1600s and was originally made from real silver. People began to notice that silver began to tarnish so they began to substitute other metals, such as aluminum in place of silver. Tinsel was at first used to enhance sculptures, but was later added to Christmas trees in order to enhance the flickering candles set on the tree.
There are several stories as to how the stockings originated, but the most popular is this. St. Nicholas overheard several villagers talking about a very poor man who had three daughters and would not be able to afford Christmas gifts. St. Nicholas set aside some money for each of the girls; when he crept inside the home to place the money he noticed the young girls had their stocking hanging on the mantel, so he place the money in the stockings.
The candy canes have been around for years, but it’s said that they got their cane shape from a choirmaster in Germany who be the canes to represent the Good Shepherd Jesus and gave them to children at church services.
