Love it, like it, or hate it; everyone has played Monopoly at some point in their lives. It is the game about buying property, paying rent, buying houses, going to jail and paying income taxes. Monopoly is produced in 26 languages and is sold in 80 countries around the world. It is obvious that this game is the most popular and beloved game that is on the market. There is several versions of this game available. Everyone knows this fact but how many people actually know when Monopoly started.
It is believed that Charles Darrow created Monopoly during the time of the Great Depression. He attempted to sell this game to Parker Brothers but Parker Brothers rejected it saying that this game was too long and too complicated. Not to be discouraged, Darrow went to a friend and produced 5,000 copies of his game. When the demand became more than he could handle, he went back to Parker Brothers. This time Parker Brothers bought the game. Now, this is the history that some people know, however, Monopoly was created 30 years before.
Elizabeth Magie was the real inventor of Monopoly. Only it was not called Monopoly; it was called the Landlord Game. Magie created this game in 1904. Her intentions with this game was to explain some of the economic ideas of Henry Gorge. A few years after she came up with this game, it was published. Magie and her friends redeveloped the game and made new sets. Magie then patented a revised addition of the game in the year 1924.
By the 1970’s, Monopoly’s earliest inventor (Magie) and it’s history was forgotten or surpressed. By then, everyone gave credit to Charles Darrow for inventing this game. Well a professor “rediscovered” the true inventor of Monopoly and fought Parker Brothers over the trademark of the Monopoly game.
Finally, after years of court proceedings, Parker Brothers owns the trademark of Monopoly. Parker Brothers did not assume full ownership of Monopoly until the mid-1980’s. After that, Monopoly and any specific design elements remain a registered trademark of Parker Brothers. However, the parent corporation of Parker Brothers (Hasbro) still claim that Darrow was the sole inventor of Monopoly and that he had no help from anyone other than his friend who helped him print the game.
Charles Darrow may have printed the game and then sold the game to Parker Brothers, but the fact is that the real inventor of Monopoly is indeed, Elizabeth Magie. Monopoly was inspired by her Landlord Game. This is the real history of the classic Monopoly board game.
