Unexpected and unusual,
Surprises I don’t often like.
But then you showed me beauty,
Within the dark shadows of the night.
The strength of the city,
Beneath the graffitied signs;
Of drug abusers and the projects,
Just south of Pier 39.
The Pier sparkles with chaos,
Techo and spray paint fly.
And that’s when the adventure begins,
Right after we board the 8x at night.
There is a lot to learn from the city,
It reminds you of who you are.
Because the struggles of a life worth living,
Showcase the signs of a strong heart.
I fell in love with mini donuts,
Got my fortune read too,
Was convinced to get a bread bowl,
of some really bad soup.
And with the dread of the MUNI,
And the wrath of my Boss,
I wonder how I got so lucky,
To be the one that’s not lost.
To hate a city so much,
Comes with a love so profound and deep,
For one doesn’t come without the other,
They merely follow within feet.
And then I look back,
At the memories that never fade,
The sound of one thousand Greasers in Dolores
As we danced the night away.
I remember the strobe-lights in the kitchen,
And a workout play list on,
We drank more than we’ve ever had-
Leaving our tolerance for Gone.
And all the frustration of the city,
Is excused as I say goodbye,
To this mess of confusion and laughter-
To this wonderful great time.
