I just now finished watching “The Lady in the Water”, and (slow hand clap) Wow! Mr. Shyamalan you have done it again. Bravo! Even the gag reel, the behind the scenes, are done with such a seriousness…Shyamalan’s a sphinx! I can not tell if he’s just trying to make up money for losses due to piracy or he genuinely wants to make B grade cult comedic films.
This movie must have been written over the weekend (possibly all improv), on a budget of $40,000 maybe. It stars Paul Giamatti as an apartment manager trying too help Bryce Dallas Howard (No! That is not Elijah Wood on the cover!!) a water nymph named Story return to her home. The movie is supposed to be based on a bedtime story he made up and tells his children, and Behold! He reads from the illustrated work in the behind the scenes, straight faced!
It’s difficult too honestly describe how awfully great this film really is. Shyamalan leaves the mind crucified for 109 minutes. It’s like he punches you and takes your money…but then you thank him for it, and grow to like it. The acting is superb, against the absurd plot. While, “The Lady in the Water” is not as hysterical as “The Happening” i would definitely add the DVD to my collection, or even frame the cover art on the wall with a light under it.
What is even more humorous, than Shylaman’s films themselves is the audiences lack of a funny bone. I’ve met people who actually hold “The Happening” as a good film in a serious way! I personally had an uncontrollable laugh attack when the “water lord” in “The Last Airbender” started going “whooooooooo” as a war cry! Again, the movie goers..stone-faced! I can not wait too see “Devil”. Pure genius!
