History can be compiled of many different things: political history, religious history, cultural History, and even personal history. Political history speaks of events in politics. Stories about George Washington are history; information about legislation that has past previously is also history. The Bible is the best testament of religious history. The Bible tells of Christ, the Apostles and the history of God and His expectations of His children. Cultural history takes people back in time telling them about things that happened to different societies in the past. The best examples of cultural history are those found by archeologists. Personal history is the vastest of all historical facts. Each person has a different personal history, which makes it extremely interesting.
History means facts of the past. To be true and validated, facts must be actual events. If statements or ideas are present without validated facts, they are opinions or theories. However, someone’s theory can become history once it is documented as a theory. Darwinism in itself is not a historical event yet, the theory of Darwinism and its teachings are historical because one man had a theory and it was believed to be true by some people.
History is a search for the truth. Some people’s perception of an event or idea may differ from anther view but the facts of the event remain the same. There are Historical facts from ancient times that have to be pieced together based on information presented which can only be based on faith. Faith in the one translating the information. Archeologists and scholars constantly search for the truth in the artifacts and other items they find from the past.
Societal background has an effect on people’s understanding of history. People in Utah might view the Indian Society and their history in a different way that people in Cortez, Colorado. There are many Indian Reservations in Colorado, there are a lot of artifacts and there’s a lot of history. A friend of mine from Utah thought that the Indians in Colorado would still live in Tee Pees and wear ceremonial clothing all the time. She was surprised when she found out that they dressed just like everyone else. Her perception of Indian people was different because of where she grew up.
I remember an event in history that is different from my definition solely because of the generation I grew up in. Vietnam was originally a political action, war was never declared. Years later, for some reason, politicians or scholars changed the facts and now society is suppose to call it The Vietnam War. Some scholars say that they changed History but, the fact remains, when troops were sent to Vietnam it was a Police Action, war was not declared, the facts can not be changed, except in textbooks.
Where a person is born and what they’ve done throughout their life is personal history. A person’s background, children and even how they live their life is also personal history. Personal history varies from person to person.
History is about facts that happened in the past. History is compelled of many things. The facts are set in stone and can not be changed. Sometimes facts are perceived differently but facts of History remain unchanged.
