The Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. located at Clayton and Haight, is often busy. Most days, people seeking medical help line up even before opening time. Most of the patients do not have health insurance; many are homeless. You’ll find people who had been living in the streets come for help for their medical issues, which may include cold-flu or drug-related medical issues and anything in between. Some are drop-ins, but most come with appointments. Low-income families who can barely make it from paycheck to paycheck and are unable pay for health insurance often find their way at the doorsteps of Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, where they know they will be able to find help.
Thanks to the kind-hearted staff of volunteers, which include doctors, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, phlebotomist, massage therapists and many others, Haight Ashbury Free Clinics can keep providing the necessary help for anyone who is in need of medical attention. In my mind, as well as many people whom they have helped, these volunteers are true heroes. They give their services without receiving money in return. Although, it may be true that some of them are fresh out of school who volunteer their skills to gain experience in return, however, it takes a big heart to be able to do what they do.
As with any non-profit organization, aside from volunteers who donate their skills, the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics have stayed afloat for the past 42 years through grants and generous donations.
Aside from cash, checks and credit card donations, you can also donate through PayPal or GiveDirect by going to their website at http://www.hafci.org/donate.html.
