The Mutants are Revolting is the 100th episode of Futurama, and the finale of the first half of season 6. In this episode, the Planet Express Crew leads the mutants in a revolution for their equal rights. There are spoilers ahead.
Professor Farnsworth announces the crew’s 100th delivery, which is to deliver one of Elzar’s souffles to Mrs. Astor. Mrs. Astor has a heart condition, so Elzar puts nitroglycerin in the souffle, so the crew has to make sure it won’t explode. Impressed with the delivery, Mrs. Astor invites the crew to a fundraiser for Brown University, a sub-surface university for mutants. At the fundraiser, Fry accidentally outs Leela as a mutant, and she’s immediately deported to the underground.
Feeling guilty, Fry decides to get Leela back, so the crew goes to visit the mayor to get him to grant her an amnesty. Instead, they end up outing themselves for harboring a mutant and get a two week sentence underground. Leela is still mad at Fry for getting her deported and tells him to take a dip in the mutating lake. Meanwhile, the crew finds the sunken remains of the Land Titanic, the biggest and only land ship. While on the Land Titanic, it is discovered that Mr. Astor, Mrs. Astor’s wife, was on the ship.
Deciding he’d do anything for Leela, Fry does end up taking a dip in the mutating lake, where he becomes incredibly gross. This act causes Leela to call the mutants to action and fight for their equality on the surface. They back up the sewage to the surface and lead a march, while Fry is investigating something on the Land Titanic passenger list. Mrs. Astor wants to have the mutants flushed back underground, but Fry reveals a startling discovery – Mr. Astor gave up his seat on an escape pod for a young mutant and her mother. Another startling discovery is that Mr. Astor is still alive, as a mutant. There are happy endings all around.
Overall, The Mutants are Revolting is a decent episode. They abuse the 100th episode thing, but it’s still pretty fun. Devo was a great guest band, and there was decent Fry and Leela relationship development. There weren’t as many great jokes this week, but it was still a fairly strong episode. The season has ended much better than it began, and I am eagerly awaiting for the show’s return.
