Why hadn’t anyone told me about the Oasis Family Fun Center in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania? How many weekends have I watched my four-year-old grand-daughter, especially on rainy weekends, trying hard to keep her entertained (and often failing), when a 20,000 square foot indoor playground existed just minutes away from my home in West Chester? This article reviews the extensive indoor facilities found in the Oasis Family Fun Center, conveniently located in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania – less than a half-hour’s drive from south Philadelphia, West Chester, and even Wilmington, Delaware.
As background, I watch my four-year-old grand-daughter nearly every weekend, from Friday night to Sunday night. I have to admit her occasional antics and typical four-year-old tantrums have helped change some of my brown hair to gray hair. If only I had known that just fifteen minutes away a 20,000 square foot indoor playground existed, all my hair might still be brown! I learned about the Oasis Family Fun Center from a coupon in an advertising booklet that arrived in the mail to my home. Glancing at it, I put it aside for possible use, “just in case”, but I did not mention it to my granddaughter. On a nice warm August Sunday, with several hours of chores in front of us, I promised my granddaughter that I would take her somewhere special if we got everything done correctly and quickly, but I did not tell her where. We finished up around noon, got ourselves cleaned up, and hopped in the car. I still hadn’t told her where we were going, and she fell asleep about five minutes into the fifteen minute ride. She’s not known for being a good “wake-up” person, so when we arrived at the Oasis parking lot, I had to wake her up (she was tired and grumpy), and then carry her in.
It took less than a minute once we were inside for her eyes to lighten up in delight. The Oasis Family Fun Center might not be a candy or toy store, but nevertheless, my granddaughter was enchanted the moment she saw the inside. Little miss grumpy changed her frown into a smile in no time at all.
I selected a play package for her, and she was off. I let her pick out several rides and games to play using a prepaid Oasis fun-card. There were over sixty games to choose from, covering a good age range. With many of the games, the players can earn tickets for points, which are then redeemable at the prize counter. My grand-daughter enjoyed choosing several small prizes with the tickets she had won.
Before she entered the multi-level play area, I realized she was wearing flip-flops and had no socks. For a moment, I thought this would be a problem (as the play areas allow no shoes, but children must wear socks), but it turned out that Oasis also has new socks available for purchase at $1.50 each.
Once the socks were purchased and on her feet, she was into the first multi-level play area, with slides, rope bridges, mazes, obstacles and tunnels. Oasis conveniently has sitting areas for adults to wait and watch for their young charges in the play areas – which is a perfect chance for an adult to relax, while still being accessible to the youngster. There is an area of large, soft building items, and along with some other children, my granddaughter built forts, castles and stores and had a blast. Finally hunger hit her; and there too, Oasis had us covered, offering a selection of lunch and snack items. We both chose the pizza combo. While eating, I noticed they also have a party room, presumably for birthday parties and special events.
After our lunch, we found a second large play area “ballocity” where children can climb multiple levels, shoot soft foam balls out of “cannons”, and do other fun things. I added that onto our package, and played a few rounds of skee-ball for myself.
When my granddaughter spotted the Oasis Family Fun Center’s rock climbing wall, we checked into that, but found that climbers must be wearing sneakers, and she was in flip-flops. It is a testament to how much is available at the Oasis Family Fun Center that her disappointment was only a brief flicker, and she was off to try the laser maze instead. The Oasis Family Fun Center also has miniature bowling, but with all the activities available, my granddaughter never got around to trying that.
We were at the Oasis Family Fun Center about five hours, and when it was time to leave the Oasis Family Fun Center, she did not want to leave – she was just having so much fun! It was definitely a bargain; to play all day in both the soft arena and the ballocity arena, without add-on games or food, would only cost $10 for a child her age. The VIP pass allows access to both the soft arena and ballocity play areas, and also includes a try at the lazer maze, a try at the rock wall, and $5 on the fun card – all for just $20.
We will definitely be back; the Oasis Family Fun Center is a very nice diversion for children under age 12. Since it is completely indoors, it is a great way to offer children a chance to drain off excess energy in a safe, controlled environment.
