It seems that the McRib has came out of the woodworks–once again. Many of us hoped and prayed that it would stay around forever like the Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder. But unfortunately, this burst of joy is to be short-lived.
The McRib returned on November 2, 2010, but it is just visiting McDonalds for a few weeks. Just think of it as a “temporary relocation.” We should enjoy this sandwich while we can.
Since the McRib is coming out from “retirement,” at least for a while, there is good reason to celebrate. But before we celebrate, the McRib’s story goes way back!
For those individuals that forgot what the McRib sandwich consists of, let’s take a crash course. It is composed of pre-made and pre-cooked ground pork patty, barbecue sauce, with a dash of onions and pickles that is placed on a six-inch roll. The McRib is frozen and it is re-heated.
When this sandwich came into existence for the first time, there was the McRib barbecue sauce packet that was dubbed ad the “Blazing Hot Sauce.” This sauce accompanied the sandwich. The sauce was insanely hot; it was hotter than the Louisiana Hot Sauce and the regular barbecue sandwich on the pre-made sandwich. As a result, it did not stay around for long. Not only that the parent version of the McRib were sold at McDonald’s. The child was present as well. The McRib Jr. resided at McDonald’s for a very limited time during the late 1990s. McRib Jr. was the replacement for the sesame seed roll with a regular-sized hamburger bun. It was serviced with a smaller version of the pork patty. The junior rib was a little less expensive that its parent McRib.
The McRib began as just a little taste test. This marketing test was taken in Nebraska and other Midwestern markets. It became a success. As a result, it became part of the restaurant’s permanent menu across the United States. Unfortunately, it was discontinued, but made a comeback, just for a brief period of time. The McRib went back into retirement-again. How many more times is this sandwich is going to disappear and reappear? No one knows the answer.
The question: will the McRib stay in retirement for eternity or is it going to keep on torturing our taste buds on and off whenever it feels like showing up in our hungry lives. It’s time for McDonald’s to make a final decision!
