It is devastating under the best of circumstances to be out of work, or at the very least struggling financially. During the holidays it is horrible. I went through this with three young kids about 28 years ago. My ex-husband left us with no money and with broken hearts. It was the best thing that could have happened to us in hindsight.
Along with it though was the loss of the dream of our family becoming healed, adding that to having no money for food or bills, it was terrifying. Not every struggling family has to deal with broken marriages or abuse. Many are just struggling with the horrible economy. Many have lost their unemployment benefits and are sweating being able to keep their homes. Many have given up that dream because their homes are already lost.
I remember the shame and humiliation of walking into the Salvation Army. I had a $400 gas bill and no job. I had quit my part-time job because my husband was supposed to watch the kids in the evening while I worked. I found out that he was drinking and driving around with my kids in the back of the truck. I quit immediately, because their safety was the most important thing to me. He got even by leaving.
I will always be grateful to the Salvation Army for taking care of the gas bill for me. I had a clean slate and was able to keep up with the bills but it was not easy.
