When the boys come out to play in Hollywood they end up in prison or rehab, or both! For these five Hollywood men – Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, Robbie Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Christian Bale – their bad public behavior have reinstated my belief that ‘boys will be boys.’
By the age of twenty, Chris Brown the American R&B sensation had it all – hit albums, adoring fans from all around the world, and superstar Rihanna as his girlfriend. They appeared to be a cute and happy couple in love, but in February 2009, Brown’s squeaky clean image was tarnished forever when he was accused of physically assaulting Rihanna after a pre-Grammy’s party in Los Angeles, California. The highly publicized criminal case against Brown cost him his career as he was sentenced to five years probation and six months’ community service after pleading guilty to felony assault against his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. He was also ordered to pay fines, complete a year of domestic violence classes, and to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna.
In his first public interview on Larry King Live on CNN, he stated that he did not remember assaulting Rihanna and blames his childhood when he witnessed his mother getting assaulted by his step-father. Since then, Brown has failed to chart any hits and has not appeared in any acting roles since his public break up with Rihanna. A very bad boy with no remorse for his actions.
Drugs and guns are no stranger to rapper Lil’ Wayne, as his string of criminal offenses since 2007 has been the focus of his career. In July 2007, he was charged in New York for criminal possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana and in October he was also arrested in Georgia for possession of a controlled substance. In January 2008, border patrol police in Arizona discovered 105 grams (3.7 oz) of marijuana, 29 grams (1 oz) of cocaine, 41 grams (1.4 oz) of MDMA, and $22 000 in cash. Lil’ Wayne was charged with four felonies: possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Lil’ Wayne just did not learn his lesson as he was charged again in December 2009 in Texas, when an unknown amount of marijuana was found on two of his tour buses.
Finally, on March 8, 2010 Lil’ Wayne was sentenced eight months in prison for his drug charges and is currently serving his time at Rikers Island in New York. He is scheduled to be released from prison in November 2010. I can’t wait for Lil’ Wayne’s post-prison single to be called “I’ll be locked up again.”
Famously known for being the bad boy of the 1990’s boy band Take That, Robbie Williams went solo in the late 1990’s and has sold over 55 million records worldwide. But Williams became famous for his erratic behavior when he almost died of a drug over dose the night before Take That was scheduled to perform at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Since then, Williams has been very open about his on-going battle with mental illness, obesity, self-esteem issues, alcoholism, and drug addiction. During his involvement in Take That, he stated that Elton John had assisted him to enter rehabilitation because of his drug addiction that emerged from his depression. In February 2007, William entered rehab again in Tucson, Arizona for his addiction to prescription drugs: Xanax, Seroxat, Vicodin, and the energy drink Lucozade. He also claimed to smoke up to 60 cigarettes a day, but finally quit in 2009. Along with his drug addiction, Williams is known to have dated many well-known female celebrities like Rachel Hunter and two of the former Spice Girls Geri Halliwell and Melanie C. To sum it up, A plus for trying that hard to be a bad boy, but points have to be deducted for being a boy band member in the first place. Since 2007, he has been dating actress Ayda Field and recently the two got married in Los Angeles on August 7. It looks like Williams has kissed his days of being a bad boy goodbye. Hopefully.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Handsome looks can be deceiving when it comes to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, because when this boyish-looking Irish actor turns to drink, all hell breaks loose. The Match Point and Tudors actor has had various run-ins with the law, usually involving alcohol while waiting in airports.
In 2007, Meyers entered rehab for alcohol addiction. But after several months after his release, he was banned from boarding a flight to London, England at the Dublin airport and was arrested for public intoxication. In June 2009, Meyers was arrested again at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris after punching an employee while getting drunk at the airport lounge.
In May 2010, the third time was enough to send Meyers back to rehab after he was arrested at the John F. Kennedy airport in New York. According to The Huffington Post, “Despite the early morning departure time, airline workers noticed the actor ‘pounding drinks’ in the first class lounge and becoming increasingly drunk and disorderly. Meyers then attempted to board the plane but was prohibited from flying due to ‘belligerent’ and ‘disruptive’ behavior that ‘was getting out of control.'”After the incident, United Airlines completely banned Meyers from all future flights, with Radar online alleging that the actor had drunkenly used the racist “N word” against one of their employees. Meyers probably does not mean to be a bad boy, he probably just has a fear of flying.
When it comes to a hot temper, Christian Bale is in serious need of anger management classes. The star of the critically acclaimed Batman movie The Dark Knight, allegedly lost control of his temper while shooting Terminator 4: Salvation. According to Entertainment Weekly, Bale cursed at the director of photography D.P. Shane Hurlbut when he interrupted a scene. Bale allegedly said, “I want you off the set! No, don’t just be sorry! Think for one f**king second! What the f**k are you doing? Are you professional or not?” I bet the term “quiet on the set” took on a whole different meaning after this outburst.
Hot-head Bale lost it again in July 2008, on the night before The Dark Knight premiered in London, when he was arrested and accused of assaulting his mother and sister in his hotel suite. Charges were later dropped against Bale. I guess family and colleagues just get under Bale’s skin all too easily.
