All Saints Day is a Christian holiday celebrated on November 1st to commemorate all saints known and unknown. The eve of All Saints Day is All Hallows Eve or more commonly known as Halloween. It is celebrated by those in both the East and West Christian churches however is not a very well known or celebrated holiday like Easter, Halloween, or Christmas.
The celebration of All Saints Day starts the night before on Halloween. On this day it is customary in America to give out candy and dress up in spooky costumes and outfits. This is a fun celebration which many churches host things for to let the kids and even adults have fun and be in group activities. Some people also visit cemeteries and pay their respects however this is less common, especially in The united States of America. In the Catholic Church All Saints day is considered a mandatory day to come to church unless you are deadly ill or giving birth. However in America it isn’t considered mandatory unless it falls on a Sunday, and it isn’t mandatory at all in Hawaii.
As for All Saints Day itself it is a great momentous holiday with lots of thanks to the many saints and recognizing their contributions to Christianity. Many non Catholic Christians associate All Saints Day with idolatry and think it is meant to worship saints however, this is untrue. If on this day someone prays to a saint of worships them as they would God, then yes this is idolatry, however this is not what is meant to happen on this day. All Saints Day is meant to be a day to recognize and commemorate all the many saints known and unknown and recognize the things they did to contribute to Christianity and the teachings of God they spread. In some churches they also give recognition to people of the church who have died within the past year and they light a candle for them.
One of the biggest parts of All Saints Day is the feast. The feast is meant for everyone to have a good time and talk and remember everyone who has contributed to the church. Also during the day there are many readings from the new and old testament and a lot of bible study. Stories are read of all the great saints one of the most common being the Virgin Mary. However there are thousands of canonized saints recognized by the church for their works or holy miracles associated with them so there are plenty of saints to learn about. Kids usually have a kids church to learn about some saints while adults have their own Bible study to learn a more detailed, informative view of saints. There is also usually a morning communion in which bible passages are read about many saints and a sermon is usually given on the importance of helping your church and worshiping God everyday. There is also usually singing of hymns about the saints and worshiping God and Jesus Christ.
