For the past three days, I have been documenting my daily activities in order to observe how I distribute and manage my time. Doing this has allowed me to see certain patterns and tendencies that I have and also given me reason to alter some of the things that I do.
Recreation is a necessary part in anyone’s day. It keeps a person down to Earth and calm. Unfortunately, from my schedule, I do not believe I am getting enough recreation time. Additionally, the recreation time that I do have is not at a good time for my daily schedule. My main sources of recreation during the week are working out and playing club tennis. These events only total about 3 hours a week, and usually occur at night. Other activities such as watching TV and playing video games have disappeared from my daily schedule due to my work load. I believe that this may not be good for me, and I should schedule more recreational time. Furthermore, I should try to do other activities, such as swimming and participating in voluntary events. I believe that with an increase in my recreational time, I will be less stressed and can perform better in school.
Opposing recreation is work. Work, in the form of classes, labs and research, compose the bulk of my day. On average, I have classes for about 4 hours a day, for a total of 20 hours a week. If this isn’t enough, I also have research for about 4 hours a week. Doing the numbers of this, I do approximately 8 times more work than I do recreation. Although this is something I should improve on, I do not believe the amount of work I do needs to decrease. I must continue to work hard to do well in my classes. This includes studying, which takes up about 10 hours total weekly. Although this may seem like nothing to other students, I believe this is a comfortable number for me.
The final big factor in my daily routine pertains to natural physiological needs such as eating and sleeping. This is an area I believe definitely needs some tweaking. From my schedule, I sleep only about 5 hours a night on weekdays and 10 hours a night on weekends for a grand total of about 45 hours. Although my weekend sleep in comfortable, I believe I definitely need to sleep more during the week. Recommended levels of sleep are around 8 hours per night, something I am definitely not getting. This may be affecting my emotions as well as my performance in school. By sleeping more, I can feel better and I know I will do better in my classes. As far as eating goes, I came up with the figure of about 12 hours spent eating per week. Eating is convenient because I can multitask while doing it. Therefore at this time I do not see any need to change my eating times habits.
The activities I have discussed only total about 94 of the 168 hours in a week. Although I do spend my time doing many other things, I believe these were the core activities of my daily life that need to be addressed. I see now that I need to manage my time better, especially since I am in college and away from home. I need to sleep more and relax more. These changes are definitely for the better, and I hope to enact them into my daily regimen as soon as possible.
