And the plot thickens….
At the end of the last episode (Masquerade) Elena was abducted from the Lockwood Mansion following the masquerade ball. As Damon was shutting Katherine in the tomb she warned him to protect Elena, of course he thought it was just her rambling trying to save herself from being entombed.
Turns out there was something to her last ditch efforts. The pair behind Elena’s abduction is two vampires, Rose and her BFF of 500 hundred years, Trevor. They are running from someone bigger and badder than a pair of powerful 500 year old vampires. Something that has them terrified. The really bad news is that Elena seems to be the key to their freedom.
No one notices Elena is missing until the morning after the ball when Jeremy scolds Stefan for keeping Elena out all night without telling anyone. Once everyone realizes Elena is missing they think “uh oh maybe Katherine knows something.” However opening that tomb and talking to Katherine is the last thing they want to do. Thankfully Bonnie is able to cast a locator spell to find Elena- which sends Damon and Stefan in the right direction.
On a side note before Damon heads off on the road trip with Stefan to save Elena he tells Caroline to stay away from the newly turned werewolf Tyler. Right, like Caroline is going to be able to keep a secret especially with Tyler pushing and prodding until she has to get a little forceful with him, which leads to a little tell all ending with Caroline making Tyler promise not to divulge their supernatural secrets to anyone. Right cause teenagers, even paranormal ones, are so great at understanding the significance of life and death situations. I’m sure we’ll see how that story arc plays out in upcoming episodes.
My thoughts? If Katherine could hook up with a werewolf couldn’t Caroline make nice with Tyler so he doesn’t come after the vamps? Just a thought.
Back to Stefan and Damon who are doing a little brotherly bonding on their way to (once again) save Elena. Stefan tells Damon he’s been building up his tolerance to blood by drinking from Elena. Damon looks upset. Stefan prompts Damon to admit he’s in love with Elena too. This opens the door for a heart stopping moment at the end of this episode but I’m getting ahead of myself. For now Damon stays silent.
Meanwhile Jeremy and Bonnie are anxiously hoping for Elena’s safe return when Bonnie decides to send a magical message to Elena. Too bad the magic is wearing Bonnie down and she passes out after blood drips from her nose.
At the creepy southern mansion Elena is learning a few things about vampires and Katherine that just create more questions than answers.
We learn that Elena is the Petrova doppelganger, and she’s not the first. Katherine was also a Petrova doppelganger (was she the first, are there others?) but she escaped her fate. Rose and Trevor plan to exchange Elena for their freedom from the first vampires (another big ??) specifically a vampire named Elijah. Seems Trevor did something bad involving Katherine that displeased Elijah and the other original vampires. But hopefully all will be forgiven when they hand Elena over.
This bit of mythology is a bit confusing but somehow the blood of the doppelganger combined with the moonstone can break the curse of the sun and the moon. Hmmm…break the curse- so what vampires can walk in sunlight and werewolves can change whenever or will they stop being vampires and werewolves and be what…human? Confusing.
Elijah grants Rose her freedom thanks to her Elena offering but Trevor’s freedom comes in the form of losing his head.
Before Elijah can leave with Elena Damon and Stefan arrive just in time for a grand rescue. With a few failed attempts at subduing Elijah with Alaric’s wacky weapons Damon manages to stake Elijah. Elena runs right into…Stefan’s arms even though Damon is her hero. He looks exquisitely pained. (Ian Somerhalder is a perfect Damon, the man can express more with just his eyes than most actors can with their entire body.)
Elena ends up safely back at home and all is well and good…so it seems. But the ancient, original vampire Elijah is not dead (how is that possible?) and Rose shows up at the Salvatore mansion to warn Stefan about Klaus who seems to be even more of a danger to Elena than Elijah. Wow. Always the drama with the vampires, huh?
Now on to the best, juiciest confession of The Vampire Diaries, not just in this episode but of all time…
So we all knew it was there but we didn’t know if Damon would ever confess…and OMG he does. In a heart wrenching, toe curling scene Damon appears in Elena’s bedroom to return her vervain necklace which had been ripped off by Elijah.
Before giving it back he says: “I love you, Elena. And it’s because I love you that I can’t be selfish with you. I don’t deserve you. But my brother does.” He then plants the sweetest, gentlest kiss on Elena’s forehead (while a tear escapes his eye) then he utters the heart-wrenching lines: “I wish you didn’t have to forget this. But you do.”
OMG. Better than that cliff hanger when Damon kissed Katherine and we all thought, for the briefest moment, it was Elena. I am such a sucker for bad boys that I root for Damon even though I probably shouldn’t. I wonder, will Elena ever give Damon a chance? Hmm…probably not if she never discovers how he really feels about her.
After all that Elena still doesn’t know of Damon’s true feelings. The episode ends with her standing alone in her bedroom post-compelled and totally bewildered wearing her necklace. Damon is nowhere in sight.
If a secret is revealed then compelled to be forgotten, was it ever revealed at all?
