The Vampire Diaries “Katherine, Werewolves, Human Blood” Season 2 Episodes 1-5 Recap

by bogbit

The Vampire Diaries is on a one-week hiatus so let’s recap what’s happened in the season so far:

Elena & Stefan & Damon
Elena and Stefan were still together even though they struggled last season when Stef went on a human blood-drinking bender. Damon was initially hurt that Elena wasn’t the one who kissed him outside of her house in the last episode of season one. Damon still pined for Katherine, but she hurt him by telling him she never loved him, only Stefan. Damon was also hurt when Elena told him that she loved Stefan and not him so he snapped Jeremy’s neck in front of Elena. But luckily Jer just got the magic ring from Uncle John that made him immune to dying at the hands of something supernatural. This act though made Elena freeze Damon out of her life. Damon tried to get over this by bonding with Alaric – the high school teacher who seems to never be at work. The two were curious about the Lockwoods so went to Alaric’s ex-wife-turned-vampire Isobel’s old office at Duke University to see if they could find anything. Isobel’s student was there to help them except first she tried to kill Elena because she thought Elena was Katherine. Damon saved Elena and Elena began to forgive him. They also found out from the student that werewolves can kill vampires with their bite. Damon then was on a werewolf killing spree, meaning he tried to kill Mason Lockwood a few times without any luck and this prompted a war between them. Damon also encountered Katherine on the street and it appeared that he was over her. It was during the Founder’s picnic when Mason told Sheriff Forbes about Damon and Stefan being vampires. He spiked the lemonade with vervain thereby outing Damon. The two were lured into the Lockwood dungeon where Sheriff Forbes was going to kill them. Stef was weak because he didn’t drink human blood so to remedy that he decided to wean himself on just a few drops of human blood a day. Elena decided to help him by cutting her hand so he could suck her blood.

Katherine
Katherine was back in Mystic Falls and nobody could figure out why. She showed up at the end of last season when she pretended to be Elena and stabbed Uncle John Gilbert. John recovered but was forced to leave town by Stefan. Katherine fooled Damon at first when she kissed him as “Elena” but Stefan was never fooled by her. Stefan questioned Katherine about her motives and she claimed she returned because of her love for him. And she was also immune to vervain, which we found out when Stef tried to lock her up in the Salvatore dungeon but she was only playing him and eventually broke free. Kat also turned Caroline into a vampire and forced her to spy on Elena and Stefan for her otherwise she would hurt Matt. In the last episode we saw that Kat had fooled Mason Lockwood and maybe had a hand in turning him into a werewolf. Even though Nina Dobrev plays both Elena and Kat excellently it’s easy to distinguish the two. Elena has straight hair, an earnest expression and wears jeans and t-shirts. Kat has curly hair, a surly expression and wears more flashy clothing. She’s definitely spiced things up in Mystic Falls and we can’t wait to see what other havoc she wreaks.

The Lockwoods
Tyler’s uncle Mason showed up in Mystic Falls because of the death of Mayor Lockwood in the vampire fire dungeon of the last episode of the first season. But his real purpose was to get the moonstone, something he claimed was of sentimental family value. We also learned more about the Lockwood curse – the werewolf gene. It is dormant but makes the person who has it aggressive (ie: Tyler). You only become a werewolf if you kill someone. Mason had a ritual of locking himself in chains during the full moon so he wouldn’t hurt anyone, because apparently as a wolf he couldn’t control himself. Except the last full moon he was interrupted by Tyler so he had to improvise in his truck. He escaped and was attacking Stef and Caroline when Tyler showed up and chastised him with a sharp “NO!” Mason and the Salvatores were at war after Damon tried to kill him with a silver knife. So Mason created a plan to kill the vampire brothers and outed them to Sheriff Forbes. Meanwhile Tyler decided that after talking to Jeremy and Mason about the curse and moonstone Tyler eventually decided to give the moonstone to Mason. Mason was seen last episode giving the moonstone to Katherine. It turned out she was his girlfriend a year ago when Mason drew the ire of a friend in a Florida bar. The friend provoked Mason so much Mason threw him on the ground and killed him thereby triggering the wolf curse.

Caroline & Bonnie
Caroline was in the car driven by Tyler last season when he heard the mind-bending noise aimed at the vampires. The car crashed and she was seriously hurt. Bonnie convinced Damon to give her some of his blood so she would heal. Katherine got to Caroline within the 24 hours the vampire blood was in Caroline’s circulation, killed her and turned her into a vampire. Bonnie freaked out when she found out C was a vamp but still put a spell on a ring so Care could walk in the sun. As a vampire Caroline’s normal tendencies (ie: bitchiness) became amplified and she became super-jealous of girls who talked to Matt. Matt couldn’t deal with her and broke it off. In the last episode Caroline’s mom Sheriff Liz Forbes found out that Care had turned into a vampire when Caroline and Elena thwarted the plan to kill the Salvatore brothers. Caroline bit and killed two of her mom’s cop colleagues when they were in the Lockwood dungeon with the subdued Salvatore bros. Care then outed herself to her mom and Sheriff Forbes freaked out. Damon could’ve killed her but didn’t because of their friendship. So instead locked her into their mansion’s dungeon to let the vervain leave her system so she could be compelled to forget the incident. But she told Stefan that Caroline was dead to her.

Next episode: “Plan B“ Jeremy joins forces with Alaric and Damon to get Katherine. Bonnie returns to uncover info about Mason. And Sheriff Forbes and Caroline bond.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 pm on the CW TV Network.
