The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere comes just in time. Tonight’s Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere arrives as True Blood ends, so The Vampire Diaries will ensure viewers don’t go without vampires for long. Of course, the bloodsuckers from the CW are a far different breed from the ones on HBO. Aside from the obvious differences in sex and violence, the CW’s undead quickly gathered a teen following in just one year. But this series is no Twilight, as the Season 2 premiere stands to prove again tonight.
Warning: Spoilers follow.
Like Twilight, there is a love triangle between a young human girl and two supernatural beings. However, this triangle has two vampire brothers, in heroic Stefan and the scheming but charming Damon. But after last year’s finale, the triangle turned into a shocking quadrangle.
The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere comes after the game-changing twist involving human lead Elena. She constantly reminded the brothers of their sinister maker, Katherine, who both turned them and broke their hearts. Since both characters were played by Nina Dobrev, it made the link even more suspicious.
In last year’s finale, Damon appeared to share a kiss with Elena — then she changed into Katherine before the real Elena showed up. Tonight, The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere will finally pick up on that twist, as the brothers have more time to deal with Katherine’s return. What her full plans are, and how they will impact the Damon/Stefan/Elena triangle, will presumably be explained through the year.
Tonight’s return kicks off a big premiere night for the CW, as their new version of Nikita debuts afterward. But the centerpiece of tonight is The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere, as it brings back the CW’s newest and biggest hit yet.
The show is the third leg of the current vampire phenomenon in American pop culture, after Twilight and True Blood. Twilight has the larger audience, while True Blood has far more adult followers, but Diaries has managed to stand out as well. After a slow start, even critics warmed up to the show, which set it apart from Twilight right away.
The mystery, love chaos, and the breakout star power of Ian Somerhalder’s Damon helped the show find a substantial following. Now The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere must continue that momentum, and ensure that the series gets bigger from here, like True Blood did after its first year. With Katherine’s arrival into Mystic Falls, fans are confident that the series will get bigger and better.
The next chapter begins to unfold tonight, with The Vampire Diaries Season 2 premiere at 8 p.m. est on the CW.
