The Waffle House is a favorite breakfast stop for my husband and I when we are traveling through the southern United States. Their pecan waffles are my favorite, and just right for breakfast on the road! My husband stokes up on their delicious coffee. The Waffle House is celebrating its 55th Anniversary in 2010.
Waffle House is doing well, despite the fact that the restaurant does not advertise. In 2009, Waffle House made $524 million. Customers, like my husband and myself, enjoy the friendly atmosphere, good food, fair prices, and fast service. This regional cultural icon has over 1600 locations in 25 states.
According to its website, since 1955, the Waffle House System has served:
957,041,599 Cups of Coffee
1,173,838,328 Hashbrown Orders
370,545,935 Sausage Patties
786,449,152 Bacon Strips
14,899,594 Slices of Ham
22,217,455 Slices of Pie
123,587,123 T-bone Steaks
115,220,427 Hamburger Quarters
479,312,699 Glasses of Coke
1,108,574,633 Order of Grits
72,567,509 Cheese n’ Eggs
That’s a LOT of food! Since their pecan waffles are my favorite, I found these fun facts interesting: The Waffle House system serves more than 334,000 pounds of pecans in their waffles each year. That’s more than 21 million pecans! Since 1955, Waffle House has served 495,264,367 waffles.
One of the things that make Waffle House restaurants so much fun to eat at are their jukeboxes. They play 45 rpm singles that are produced by Waffle House. You’ll hear crazy songs like “The Waffle House Family,” “844,739 Ways To Eat A Hamburger,” “There Are Raisins In My Toast,” and “I’m Cookin’.” You can buy a CD with favorite Waffle House songs here.
Another thing that makes Waffle House a fun place to eat is being able to watch the waitresses and cooks whip up your food. The kitchen is open to the restaurant so you can watch the action. Place your order, and you’ll hear your waitress yell it out in diner lingo. It’s fascinating to watch and listen to these people as they coordinate their movements like dancers to bring you good food fast.
The Waffle House Mission Statement reads: “Our mission is to deliver a unique experience to our customers through delivering great food, friendly, attentive service, excellent price, and a welcoming atmosphere.” As a customer who enjoys visiting these restaurants, I think they are fulfilling this mission.
Waffle House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which makes it very convenient for travelers. It has been said that the restaurants have no locks on their doors. You’ll find Waffle House restaurants as far north as Eastlake, Ohio and as far west as Arizona. Next time you’re on the road, look for their big yellow signs along the highway and stop in for a good, fast meal.
