Thelgar was born near the small town of Glendale 18 years ago today. Today was his birthday and as soon as he finished his chores he was going into town to visit Alison, and hopefully skinny dip down at the swimming hole. Alison was the most beautiful girl in town and, by some stroke of luck, Thelgar’s girlfriend.
Distracted as he was by his thoughts Thelgar didn’t notice the stranger watching him from the shadows of the barn as he finished milking the cow for his family’s breakfast milk. As Thelgar leaves the barn the shadows seem to consume the dark stranger more completely as a small chuckle escapes his throat. “Ahhh, so this is the chosen one? We shall see my lord, we shall see!”
Breakfast at Thelgar’s house was a very busy time. His mother did most of the cooking herself in their home. Thelgar’s sister Kranann was only 12 but she had her share in setting the table ad doing the dishes afterwards. And Thelgar collected the milk, eggs, and bacon. This morning they were going to eat griddle cakes, boiled eggs, and cream of wheat. The sugar was purchased in town weekly, which was Thelgar’s “reason” for going into town this morning.
“Sit down guys, breakfast is almost ready. Just waiting for the last couple cakes to come off the stove.” His mother announced. The table is a simply round wooden table covered in a nice blue cloth. It actually used to be a material spool from the town tailor, but several months ago the tailor gave it to Thelgar’s mom. Now it was covered and used as the family dining table.
Bethany, Thelgar’s mother, places the pot of boiled eggs in the center of the round table, and goes back for the plate of cakes and bacon. “What are your plans today birthday boys?” she asks. “oh, just going into town to get some supplies,” Thelgar replies”we need sugar and a few other things.”
“Uh, huh “she replied with a smile. “Nothing else? Not going to see Alison?”
“Mom!” Thelgar squeaks around the orange juice that he is choking on and begins to blush. “Maybe for a bit” he says with a smirk.
` They all begin to laugh together. Laughter is big in Thelgar’s house. Since his father died mysteriously several winters ago, the family has learned to be even closer and laughter keeps them close.
Two years ago Thelgar’s Father, Lester, went out to the barn to get the morning milk and never returned. When Thelgar went to look for him, an hour later, there was nothing left but a finger and all his clothing. But there was enough blood for a whole army to have been slaughtered. It was nearly a year before Thelgar was able to sleep without waking in a cold sweat.
Thelgar quickly downs his food. Not wanting to waste any time he hurries from the kitchen door, with a quick kiss for his sister and mother, and down the road to town. Town is a nice hour walk from home and not very scenic. So to pass the time Thelgar usually hums or throws stones. Today however his mind is completely fixated on Alison. Her lips, her smell, she is so intoxicating. She told him she had something very special for him today, and his imagination had been running wild for the past week. Today he would finally find out what the big surprise was.
In fact, he was so occupied by his thoughts he failed to notice the group of e shabby men who were rapidly approaching. As they passed he finally noticed them, whether it was the movement or sound of a sword being freed, or simply their smells, something jarred him from his thoughts just in time to pull his own blade and parry the attack.
“Give us your money lad, or we’ll gut you!” the leader exclaimed. Knowing instinctively that that would serve no purpose but to get him killed Thelgar thrusts his blade forward catching the shocked thief cleanly in his ribs. A look of surprise crosses the would-be thief’s face as he drops his blade and falls to the ground. As Thelgar pulls back his blade to defend against the next attacker he realizes no one else is attacking. Rather they are all staring at him in a dazed sort of way.
“Whose next?” he asks, “Who’s next?”
Then he catches a glimpse of that they are all staring at. His blade, once rusty and dullish, is gleaming silver with a hint of read along the blades edge. “Where did that come from?” he wonders. But at the same time the other 2 thieves attack at same time. With no thoughts Thelgar rushes forward blade at the ready. As the first thief’s blade descends Thelgar’s blade glows a bright red.
Chapter 2 (Teaser)
“Why am I laying in the dirt?” Thelgar wonders. The last thing I remember was the thiev… Puling his blade he spins I and spins in a full circle searching for the thieves. There they are! But what happened? They are all lying in the dirt; well actually their bodies are lying in the road their heads are laying next to the road as though they had rolled downhill. But how did it happen? “Did I do this? I don’t remember anything” he thinks out loud.” And what was the bright flash?” o well I got to get out of here. Quickly he moves towards town only looking back twice to verify his own thoughts.
From behind a bush steps the same shadowy figure from the barn. “Well, I guess that proves it. He already has the blade and has melded with it. Though it seems he has no idea yet. This is going to be very interesting.” he says as he steps back into the bush and vanishes without disturbing a leaf.
