We still have our son’s friend staying with us, tonight being his third night; it is always interesting having two pre-teen boys together. Of course typical to boys there have been lots of video games and computer time and attempts of horse-play which I have to keep in check if I want the walls of our trailer to remain in place. Hubby did manage to get them both involved in a game of Risk. Seems when we got onto something, it becomes an obsession for awhile and right now that obsession is Risk. I patiently wait for it to run its course as I really do not like the game so await for something I like much more to take place of the Risk obsession!
Our daughter did her share of being on the computer, always looking for new things to either play or watch on YouTube. She did some time playing at Jumpstart.com today as well as looking up a variety of items. When she needs help spelling or reading something she will call someone to come and help her. This is happening less and less frequently as she improves on her reading and spelling skills.
In the evening, after dinner she wanted to make brownies, she loves to bake, so I helped her to make brownies. I usually read the recipe and help her to find the amounts on the measuring cup although she has gotten pretty good at the figuring out the measuring part of it now. She did a really great job; think she is going to take after me in her cooking and baking skills. The brownies were scrumptious and everyone enjoyed them very much!
The boys asked if they could have me and hubby’s bedroom for the night so we handed over our room where they could hook up an additional game system on our television set and have use of the computer for the night. The rest of us made our bedrolls in the living room and watched The Colony together. They made a windmill on last nights show as they were running out of gas and needed an alternative energy source, fascinating stuff! Then we watched Cake Boss together, it is unbelievable the cakes they end up decorating. What a gift to be so talented at something.
Earlier in the day hubby and I had to run an engine into the Metal Recycling center, part of what we do as Scrappers to earn money which allows us to stay home. The one bad thing about this as prices fluctuate all the time, so what may of brought a couple hundred a week ago, today may only bring forty bucks. It just all depends on the ever changing prices and you do the best you can do to earn a hard earned dollar. After that we ran to get a few groceries and came back home. We were not gone all that long though so it was a short day for scrapping since we did not have to go collect the scrap, only turn it in for pay today.
My adult daughter had asked me today, what were my plans for a new school year this year, I answered honestly that I am not sure just yet although I have some ideas. Both kids had asked me for a little more structured learning this year. I thought about sitting down and planning but last time I did that, I ended up wasting a whole summer worth of time to plan just to throw it all out a week after we started the school year. I did not want to make that mistake this time as that is a whole lot of work to go out the window. But I do have some ideas starting to form; one perhaps is kind of running it off the Sudbury Model, a democratic school where we have weekly school meetings.
Other ideas include just having more involvement and tons more activities in action. Also I am aware that when we moved here to North Carolina, we had downsized our belongings to a 5 x 8 trailer. This wiped out our canvas so to speak and has been a real slow process of building up their learning environment again. I would love to really concentrate on developing a rich and rewarding learning environment again and have been looking on amazon.com to add interesting things to our home this year. I realized though just because they have asked for a more structured year, does not necessarily mean that structure has to take on the form of textbooks and schedules and a school at home model. Over the next 2 weeks, I will be contemplating heavily on ideas, and coming up with solutions to fill their requests in a fun and interesting fashion.
