Where is a bad place to put an outdoor bench?
The answer is anywhere that you are prone to accidentally running into it.
The location for placement of an outdoor bench may often find a position close to the front or back door perhaps because of convenience, a person wouldn’t have to go far, or it is rested in the shade of trees or under an awning. And it could be that it’s close to lighting.
This location can be a dangerous spot to put a bench for two reasons.
1. It’s not in a lighted area if the lights are off.
Even if the bench is close to patio or porch lights if they are off anyone going outside in the dark can run into the bench if they can’t see it. This is especially true for a well traveled area.
The hit can cause an injury or a person can be injured when they fall. It can be a direct or indirect hit meaning that you make full contact with the bench or you graze the bench.
2. Someone forgets it’s there.
A person with a preoccupied mind whether they are in a hurry or not can forget the bench is there.
This is a good set up for a potential injury.
Another bad place to put a bench is in a flood zone particularly if it floods close to the front or back door.
If you put the bench in an area where every time it rains the water will build up and run around it or the water temporarily stands you can lose your footing and easily slip and fall into it. Anywhere that the bench is placed that you might have to go around or past it to get into your house or vehicle and it floods you have the potential of crashing into it. A flood zone could be noted as being water that washes over your shoes. If you stand in a flood zone and your shoes are completely submerged the chances increase that your feet will become slippery and they can get away from you by the rushing water around them. It’s almost like skating when your feet slide out from under you. The flood water can slide your feet out from under you into the bench causing you to get banged up.
Placement of a bench should be out of well-traveled areas where no one has to go around or past it. Small walkway lights or solar lights can be set near the bench for lighting.
