If you have tried to become a daily scripture studier, chances are good that you have found that it is difficult to be consistent about your reading on your own. Having a scripture study partner could easily be the solution to your problem, whether that partner is your spouse, a friend, or a study group. Here are three reasons why you can benefit by having a scripture study partner:
1. Peer pressure. When you work on a goal by yourself, it is easy to let yourself fail from time to time. For example, if you’re trying to read the scriptures each day, you might occasionally allow yourself to skip a day. But it is much more difficult to let yourself fail if you have a partner in your goal. When two people commit to study the scriptures together, they exert peer pressure on each other, and that pressure makes consistent reading much more likely.
2. New perspectives. Studying by oneself can be worthwhile, whether the study involves scriptures or secular material, but it is less insightful than studying with others. For maximum learning, you should seek out opportunities to hear opinions other than your own. Studying scriptures with a partner will allow you to gain new insights and profit from others’ experience.
3. Enjoyment. Scripture study with a partner can also be fun. While studying alone might sometimes seem like a chore, studying with a friend can be an interesting social experience, and thereby be more entertaining. In the process, you will get to know your partner in new ways. Discovering scriptural insights with a friend can also be a bonding experience.
For all of the above reasons, you benefit by having a scripture study partner. Your partner will also benefit as you study the Bible or other scriptures, and that is worthwhile, too.
