The American 99’ers Union
VOTE YES ON S.3706, THE AMERICANS WANT TO WORK ACT
As of today, Senators Debbie Stabenow, Charles Schumer, Harry Reid, Richard Durbin, Carl Levin, Bob Casey, Chris Dodd, Sherrod Brown, Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse, Max Baucus, Barbara Boxer, Maria Cantwell, and Jean Shaheen are in possession of a letter drafted by The American 99’ers Union requesting a call for action with respect to The Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706). As one of your constituents and a registered voter, I am also sending this vitally important letter to you, my elected official, with the request that you read on:
Advocacy groups from all across the Country have put aside any and all differences and have nowjoined together for one specific initiative and one common cause, saving American lives while in turn rebuilding the American Economy.
The American 99’ers Union * respectfully requests that The Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706) must be signed into law prior to the next scheduled break set for October 8, 2010. This bill will provide extended benefits to those who have been hardest hit by this economic crisis, as well as give employees incentives to hire those who most need jobs.
• According to the latest statistics from the Economic Policy Institute there are over 2 million 99ers (those who have exhausted all unemployment insurance and still have not been able to get a job); and the National unemployment rate has exceeded 9 percent for 16 straight months. However many believe the actual number of 99ers is closer to 5 million, and by the end of September up to 91,000 will be losing benefits each and every week.
• Every dollar spent on unemployment insurance raises gross domestic product (GDP) by $1.60. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office recently reported that increasing aid to the unemployed is more cost effective in terms of boosting economic growth and employment than a variety of other policies under consideration.
• There is only 1 job for every 5 unemployed persons, and 42% of all unemployed have been unemployed for over 6 months, with 21.9% unemployed for over 1 year. (IHS Global Insight predicts the total number of jobs in the U.S. won’t return to pre-recession levels until 2013. And that doesn’t account for the growth in the labor force.)
Our Nation’s economic system is built upon and relies upon dollars being spent on goods and services. The passage of S.3706 will allow for millions who have lost the ability to do so, to once again play an active role in this essential economic process.
What happens when demand outweighs supply…JOB CREATION. What happens when Americans have the ability to work…AMERICA and AMERICANS THRIVE.
The passage of S.3706 is not just the compassionate thing to do; it is the financially sound thing to do, to stimulate our Nation’s economic recovery!
One positive has come from the millions of Americans who have found themselves out of work through no fault of their own, and with no foreseeable end in sight based upon the status quo. We now have millions of educated voters, who will not just pull a lever based on name recognition or party lines alone. We will vote based upon job performance and the facts. Those elected representatives who step forward and truly represent the needs of their unemployed constituents will receive our votes come Election Day.
The future is now, and The American 99’ers Union will use our combined influence to ensure millions of 99ers all across the nation perform the one job they still hold on November 2nd, 2010: We will VOTE for those who have represented and continue to represent our desperate need for extended unemployment insurance and jobs, as S.3706 provides.
The American 99’ers Union
