If I was a Democratic strategist, this would be my plan going into the November elections:
A) Get off my high horse about every unemployment measure needing to be emergency spending and work to get Stabenow’s Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706) fully funded and out of committee next week for floor debate and a vote.
B) Republicans have said they will support unemployment extensions if fully funded. Put their feet to the fire. See if they would filibuster a fully funded bill.
C) Force the Senators to vote on-record in either support of or opposition to this straightforward relief plan.
D) Let the huge number of unemployed/99ers see who is in their corner and who isn’t and then we will know exactly how to vote come Nov 2. 99ers are now a huge block of voters that cannot be ignored.
Congress reconvenes on Monday, September 13. In preparation, today & every day going forward, I am going to contact every Senator that is a sponsor of the Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706) and implore them to score the bill for costs, find a way to find offsets to pay for it, and press to get it out of committee and onto the floor for debate and a vote. Nothing happens if the bill remains in committee! Obama needs to get out front on this issue as well. Thank you for your support in sponsoring S.3706 the Americans Want to Work Act. I implore you to continue to push as hard as humanly possible to get this bill scored for cost, to find offsets to pay for it, and to get this bill released from committee and onto the floor for debate and a vote. It is critical that relief be provided to the millions of 99ers through the creation of a Tier V. These once proud & hard working American’s are suffering tremendously and hundreds of thousands more unemployed will soon be joining their ranks. Your leadership in providing extended unemployment insurance to these worthy citizens is greatly appreciated.
A Very Concerned Citizen
There is a high correlation between Google/Yahoo searches, media coverage, and Congressional action. Searches by a large block of unemployed 99ers for “unemployment extension, Tier 5, Tier V, 99ers”, and similar search phrases, when performed continuously day after day, have shown marked increases in media coverage for the subjects searched. Those supportive to the cause of our nations suffering 99ers could perform this easy to do function every day and help “build up the pot” thereby increasing the level of media attention focusing on the plight of millions of 99ers. Get the media’s attention, and you will get Congresses attention. Those that question this action, I would suggest that you visit this link Google Trends and see the results generated since August 30.
Talk it up. Almost everyone has a family member, friend, laid-off work associate, or neighbor that has been impacted by this unemployment crisis. The loss of their employment is affecting you, as these people, especially the 99ers, are losing everything that they worked for. Talk to them. Find out what it’s really like out there trying to find a job when there are none available, ANYWHERE! See the pain in their faces as they try to tell you everything will be alright or when they honestly tell you they just don’t know what they’re going to do as their options disappear. Do the hard thing – talk about it, don’t take someone else’s word for it. Go to the source.
By taking these three steps, awareness of the magnitude of this National Disaster will begin to get the attention that it is due. We must remember that unemployment is NOT a political problem it’s an AMERICAN problem impacting Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. American have already said what they want done in the polls, now is the time to force our politicians into doing the will of the people!
