The sad truth is that in all likelihood the PEOPLE in this country that need to read this article won’t. For the millions upon millions that are still hanging onto a job and only momentarily think of the unemployed out of fear that they might become one, this passing thought is often quickly dismissed. We are out of the recession, right? I remember reading so in the paper or hearing it on the radio. Everything is getting better, right? Wrong!
What is really happening is that millions of our fellow citizens have become disposable. Out of sight, out of mind. Let’s just change the subject. The midterms are coming up so there must be more important things to talk about like cap & trade, tax cuts for the rich, don’t ask don’t tell, repealing the barely implemented health reform provisions, immigration; yeah, there is a lot to talk about other than the way we are abandoning millions of our fellow citizen’s that lost their job by no fault of their own and cannot find jobs in a job market that doesn’t exist. We’re out of the recession, right? Wrong!
Recent reports by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that despite the claim that the recession is over, an inordinately high number of PEOPLE are still losing their jobs and filing new unemployment claims at a monthly rate that is about 500,000 more than normal every month. 500,000! A half a million PEOPLE a month! I do not know what planet the economist that says the recession is over is living on, but it doesn’t appear to be this one.
Having followed the plight of the 99ers for many months now, I have seen the number of PEOPLE affected and becoming our new 99ers every week. This number of 99ers seems to grow by about 200,000 PEOPLE a month using conservative numbers. The longer the lack of a recovery continues more and more PEOPLE simply fall off of the unemployment roles as they exhaust all remaining benefits. Where do they go? Pretty much into oblivion. Into the world of the forgotten. America’s new poor. Just what our country needs – more poor PEOPLE right? Wrong!
This article will most likely be read by a 99er or someone unemployed that is very concerned about becoming a 99er in the near future. I sense that I spend most of my time preaching to the choir. They will read in desperation that I might provide some hope for them for a Tier V extension in the near future. That I will report that job creation is on the rise and there is hope for them getting back to work. I can only wish for the day when I am able to write about “good news.” Instead I write in hopes that I just might find that one person that was touched enough by the article to get on board for this cause and to become one more advocate for our millions of unemployed and our suffering 99ers. One more voice a day. That is my goal.
Are you the one that was moved enough to get off the dime and undertake an advocacy position for our millions of unemployed and 99ers? Do you believe that going into the midterm elections that the discussions should be all economy all the time until this disaster is fixed and we can get our PEOPLE back to work? Are you the one that will bring joy to a 99er today by saying “I’m in your corner now!” Just one voice. That’s all I’m looking for today is just one more voice. Are you the one?
