Congress is returning to session on Monday, November 15. The unemployed and millions of our nations 99ers are re-starting their campaigns to contact their Senators and Representatives in an effort to get out the word that they must take action on unemployment extensions and the creation of a Tier V immediately upon their return. With federal extensions expiring at the end of November, millions of the unemployed may see a stoppage in their unemployment checks if action is not taken quickly. Over 6 million 99ers that have already exhausted their federal extensions are pressing for the creation of a Tier V extension, or the addition of weeks to the federal unemployment extension plan.
Representing a cross section of republican, democratic, and independent political parties, all unemployed eyes are focusing on process, not politics. In an all out effort to get the ear of the legislators, the unemployed are trying to get this important message out using a variety of methods.
Contacting their U.S. Representatives and Senators
The unemployed and the 99ers are stepping up their activities in calling, emailing, and faxing their representatives in both the House and the Senate. A special focus, do to a high level of interest in passage of the Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706) sponsored by Senator Debbie Stabenow, is being made to contact the co-sponsors of this bill, the members of the Senate Finance Committee, and individual Senators to get the message out that 90% of the people voting on the OpenCongress website link for this bill are in favor of its passage.

Contacting their Governors
Never underestimate the influence and power of your own state Governor in impacting legislation at the national level. Many Governors have significant influence in molding national referendums and policy. Since most of the states in the nation are currently suffering from high levels of unemployment, the governors have significant interest in the passage of federal unemployment extension to help support their citizens and local economies.
Contacting their Local Newspapers and Media Outlets
On a national level, it is a given that the U.S. Representatives and Senators keep tabs on what the sentiments are back in their home states and districts. This is why contacting the news desk at your local newspapers and other media outlets (TV and radio) are critical for pushing for more coverage of this national unemployment disaster. Out of sight; out of mind. This cannot be allowed to happen if progress is to be made to protect millions of unemployed Americans. The unemployed are picking up the mantle and contacting their local media outlets in droves to push for more coverage of this important national problem.
Blogging, Reading, and Writing
Keeping the unemployment extension issue out front is key to getting much needed support for extensions for millions of people that are simply victims that have lost their jobs by no fault of their own. Efforts to tweet, IM, and post simple messages like “Pass Unemployment Extensions” on mySpace or Facebook accounts is very important. Letting others know that you believe in, and are in support of, extensions is serious business in today’s political climate.
