A Tier V extension = acknowledgment = significant public embarrassment. What better way to improve your chances of re-election than to simply pretend that there isn’t a giant looming unemployment problem that you should have addressed by simply ignoring it? Manipulate the media to make the deficit the focus of attention while ignoring the massive number of 99ers representing a National Disaster in your own backyard. Why risk providing an honest assessment of the gravity of the unemployment situation if it might cost you votes for dereliction of your duty? Yes, why subject yourself to public scrutiny for a failure to perform your job when with a little slight of hand you can turn a negative into a positive and win back your Senate or Representative seat in Congress. Make no mistake, this is the travesty that is being played out today by Republicans and Democrats alike as they approach the mid-term elections.
Pretend everything is OK. Pretend that help is being provided. Pretend that you have done your job. Congress has become the great pretenders, and Obama has become a mime speaking absolutely nothing about the millions of effected 99ers. 99ers are now like the plague, nobody wants to get anywhere near them for fear that they might be infected by this unemployment disease. 99ers might be better off if the government treated them unjustly like the Japanese-Americans that were interned during World War II; at least they would have access to shelter, food, and clothing until this war on unemployment has been won and jobs become available. As of now the 99ers have nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, to look forward to except more desperation.
99ers are now left with their new lives; welfare, a life of charitable homeless shelters, food banks, walk-in medical clinics, and soup kitchens all of which are all under-funded and overburdened due to massive demand for these services. At 5½+ million and growing larger every week, these people that we have painted into a corner now must consider the unmentionable. A life in which committing a crime and going to prison becomes a viable option for individual survival. A life of considering taking their own life so their remaining family members can obtain social security benefits to live on and have some semblance of a future. Desperate times are forcing desperate thoughts and desperate measures. The sad truth is that many American citizens actually believe that these millions of 99ers ARE being helped when nothing could be further from the truth.
It is hard to believe that in this great country where so many people have lost their jobs by no fault of their own; that these unemployed 99ers should be treated like pariah. This National Disaster should be treated with the urgency and breadth of any other disaster and FMEA and the Red Cross should be called in to provide assistance in multiple urban areas to provide emergency shelter, food, medicines, and clothing. The National Guard should be deployed to provide assistance. These people have children that are starving and yet we say that we can’t extend the deficit because it will negatively impact the future for our children. What hypocrisy! The future of millions of children is now first and tomorrow second!
The subject of WPA type government jobs gets no traction in many of today’s discussions; talk is all private sector jobs, all the time, when the private sector has little or no intention of expanding jobs at this point in our economic “decovery”! All political positioning aside, provide a job for a 99er, even a minimum wage job that will provide a benefit for the public good such as infrastructure improvements, and you will have an army of people signing up. Politicians and the skeptical, think I’m wrong because 99ers are supposed to be lazy and only want another handout in a Tier V extension? I say try it. Prove me wrong. But do something other than just run for re-election!
