Sometimes being a woman is kind of a pain. Not only does society expect us to doll ourselves up in makeup and high heels; we’re also expected to pay the often incredibly high cost of these products. When we add in the fact that women make less than men for the same work, buying shampoo can be the final straw that sends the average woman into a rant about the unfairness of it all. But you don’t have to spend all your hard-earned cash on beauty products. With a few tweaks to your normal routine, you can save money and still look fabulous. Here are the best ways to do it:
Buy Cheap Shampoo
Shampoo doesn’t deposit nutrients in your hair; it merely strips out dirt and oil. So that twenty dollar bottle of shampoo you have is little more than a giant waste of money. Your hair will be in much better shape if you splurge on conditioner, which actually can improve the condition of your hair, and save on shampoo.
Use Products for Multiple Purposes
If you can find several uses for one product, you’ll save yourself money and a trip to the store. Both body wash and lotion can be used as shaving cream. A Vitamin E capsule can be used to reduce frizz and smooth out lines under your eyes. Cucumbers are still the best treatment for undereye bags, and the SPF you use on your face can be used on your entire body.
Don’t Make Impulse Buys
Most women who wear makeup have a drawer full of makeup that they never use and never will use. These are the products bought on impulse, seen in a commercial, or that just didn’t do what they were supposed to do. When a product doesn’t work, return it to the store or mail it back to the manufacturer to get your money back. And don’t buy something till you’ve read up on the product and know whether or not it’s something you really want. Finally, if you’re stuck with a drawer full of unused makeup, find ways to repurpose your cosmetics. A few ways to do so:
-lipstick can be used as a cream blush
-eyeshadow can be used as eyeliner when applied with an eyeliner brush
– a cleaned off mascara wand can be used to tame eyebrows
-the foundation that didn’t work on your face can be used to cover scars or minor blemishes on your body
– loose powder can be used in your hair as a “dry shampoo” when your hair looks dirty and you don’t have time to wash it
Buy in Bulk and Online
If you use the same products over and over, you’re much better off buying them in large quantities and buying online. Internet prices on amazon.com and drugstore.com are substantially cheaper than store prices. Moreover, you’ll save gas money and avoid a time consuming trip to the store. By buying in bulk you’ll get better deals, run out of things less frequently, and again, save gas money.
Try An Electric Razor
Razors are exorbitantly expensive, bad for the environment, and oftentimes leave terrible razor burn. Electric razors work better for some women and will save you a substantial amount of money over time.
Don’t Buy Into the Hype
If commercials didn’t work, companies wouldn’t spend millions of dollars on them. Remind yourself of this every time you see a commercial for a new product. If you’re already using a product that works, don’t run out and buy the new one. In many cases, the older or cheaper product works better than the new, hyped version.
