Our bustling city of Houston has approximately 2.5 million inhabitants, not including many of the suburban areas. In a city this size, especially if you are a newcomer, mastering the public transportation system can seem like a daunting task. Houston has two choices for public transportation: the Metro bus system or the Metro light rail.
Metro Light Rail
The metro light rail is only useful if you are in the downtown area. It runs from the University of Houston-Downtown on Main Street down to Fannin South, just south of Reliant Park. The light rail is a great source of transportation if you need to get to the University of Houston downtown campus, the museum district, Hermann Park, Rice University, the Medical Center, and Reliant Park. Most people who travel to these areas of our city are frustrated by the cost of parking. However, if you park on either end of the line, prices are much cheaper. On the north end of the line near University of Houston-Downtown campus, parking is incredibly cheap and even free in some areas. Some places near the museums or Reliant Park might charge $10 to park for the day. You can find a parking spot on the north end of the line for around $4, plus your $1 ticket for the rail, you just saved yourself $5 for a day’s parking!
Metro Bus System
The Metro bus system is great for all of those who commute from anywhere from the suburbs of Houston, into the city. Metro has a program called the Park and Ride that people can use. The Park and Ride system has a designated place in which patrons can park their cars, often times in a secure area, which is not offered at all bus stops. People who wish to partake in the Park and Ride park their vehicles in their designated location and then get on the appropriate bus line into the city. The bus makes several stops on the way into downtown, so you do not have to necessarily work downtown to utilize this system. All Park and Ride lines start on the outside of the city and make their way inbound, with the end of the line being very near downtown.
Many people in the city ride the light rail and bus system, but I help these tips assist in a quicker, more convenient commute across our city!
