In many classrooms you will find that some students are a lot more advanced than other students. It can be very difficult for teachers to be able to keep up with the needs of all the students in the classroom. Below you will find a few ideas that have been tried, and tested by teachers. It is very important that advanced students are helped and not left to be bored in class. Often teachers have a tough time with this, but maybe some of the suggestions below will prove to be helpful.
Determine the child’s level
Once you realize that one, or more of the children in your class are advanced, it is a good idea to evaluate their level. Most teachers automatically do that, but they often don’t push to see how advanced their level is. There are many different tests that a teacher can give in order to determine exactly how advanced a child is. Once a child’s skill level is determined you can move on to the next level.
Find or create an advanced group
In some cases when you have more than one advanced child you may be able to form and advanced group. For example if you have one child who is advanced in reading, you can create an advanced reading group. Of course this will have to be approved first, but it is a good idea. Even if you find that you have just one you can check with the teachers in the other classrooms to see if they have students who are equally advanced. Then maybe you would be allowed to have them form an advanced group for these students.
Creating a personalized binder is really a great idea, for the student in your class is a bit more advanced. Inside of the binder you can have advanced level work in the subjects necessary. This way when they are done with their regular work, you will have additional work that you can give them. What is really nice about this is that you can make the additional work a lot more challenging so that they will stay on their advanced level. Initially this will take you extra time to do. You will need to sit down and find extra work that would prove to be helpful to them. If you completely fill the binder you should have enough additional work to last the student at least several months.
