If you don’t know what decoupage is, and you’ve never had the opportunity to use it, you’ve been missing out on some fun! Made especially for attaching paper to other things decoupage allows you to easily create all sorts of decorative things. Although decoupage is normally used to make décor pieces it can also be used to create very unusual sneakers.
The type of decoupage you use for working with tennis shoes is a type that holds up under the elements. One brand, called Modge Podge, works perfectly. Choose the outdoor type; it will state this on the front of the label. With this type of decoupage you don’t have to worry about the design falling apart when wet. The type of sneakers that work best for this project is the canvas type.
Choose tissue paper in the color or colors you want for the shoes. The paper is the kind that’s used for stuffing gift bags or wrapping presents. Available in a multitude of colors the tissue paper is ideal for creating all sorts of designs on the tennis shoes. Combine colors to make interesting designs that coordinate with most any outfit.
Tear the straight edges off the tissue paper. Tear many pieces of paper into small square shapes. Although the shapes don’t have to be perfectly square you’ll have more luck with a squarish shape than with circles, ovals or other shapes.
Use a foam brush to apply the decoupage to a small area at the toe of the tennis shoe, on top. Position the first tissue paper square then position the second square. Continue working from the toe of the shoe to the heel, placing the squares on the shoe, and overlapping some of them slightly.
To sculpt around the edges of the canvas, place a piece of tissue paper up against it, then crease it along the edges. Tear off bits and pieces that hang over the edge, onto the rubber. After all the tissue paper pieces are in place you’ll then apply more decoupage. This time, spread the adhesive over the top of the whole shoe. Allow to dry, do it again, allow to dry, then do it once again. The more adhesive you put on the shoe the longer they’ll hold up. Even though the sneakers will withstand some rain and snow you can’t put them in the washer. They’re cute, though, and fun to make!
