Have you lost some friends on facebook today and don’t know why. Well, Today is November 17, 2010 and Jimmy Kimmel declared it as National “Unfriend” Day. In his opinion Facebook cheapens the meaning of Friendship. He encouraged people to cut some of the friend fat from their life’s.
So if you have been cut today by several people don’t take it personal. Jimmy Kimmel even enlisted the help of William Shatner who boldly declared that those people on facebook aren’t our friends. Shoot! I didn’t know.
While I think the announcement is fun and entertaining it does have some serious implications. Social networks are not connecting us. They isolate us! Anyway I am not a “facebooker ” but was a huge “myspacer.” This isn’t really something new. Everyone’s in a while people would post that they going to clean out some friends and who doesn’t respond with a personal note will disappear. Come to think of it. I probably have done that myself. I always found those bulletins quite silly. Just hit the delete button already. Once or twice I send rejection notices LOL to people who requested me. Like they care…
Anyway I was made aware of “National Unfriend Day” by the Christian Contemporary Station K-Love. Kelli and Scott were talking about it yesterday and today and both didn’t like it and lost some friends today. They counteracted with the request to ad a friend today and said there are different levels of friendships.
Personally I only have a problem when I get band request after band request knowing full well that they are not really interested in me but selling their music. I usually know the real people won’t stay long since I am not that talkative.
I used to search and search for people trying to figure out who deleted my ‘friendship” but often I really didn’t know. So I figured I lost nothing to begin with.
So here is my question. Were you “unfriended” or “befriended” today? Have you “unfriended” someone because of “National Unfriend Day” and what made you chose that person?
