Exercising, losing weight and toning during winter does not mean you have to brave the cold weather. It’s possible to exercise, lose weight as well as toning up from the comfort of your own home, rather than braving the cold weather outside. Here are three exercises that can be done without leaving home.
Squats are an amazing toning exercise that can be done easily anywhere at home. WebMD touts it as one of the most effective exercises because, “Squats work multiple muscle groups — the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteals — at the same time.” Proper form is very important for toning in all these moves. Start with your feet shoulder width apart and lower your behind down as if you were sitting in a chair. Make sure to keep your knees straight above your ankles. A great way to maintain proper posture is to hold out a weight or water bottle straight out from my shoulders. After doing a set or two of this toning exercise, it will no longer seem so cold outside.
Total Body Plie with Modifiers
This second exercise to keep you at home and out of the cold weather also gives you bang for your buck. This move is a total body toning exercise and can be modified to your fitness level. You’ll need a set of dumbbells, or can also use filled water bottles or soup cans. Begin with your legs in a plie position, with your feet slightly shoulder width apart and squat down keeping your back straight. Add in bicep curls with each dip. I came across this move in a Denise Austin toning workout video and loved how so many muscle groups it activates and tones. To adjust the move, the bicep curls can be alternating, different weights can be used and the pace of the squats can be increased.
Finally a third great toning exercise to keep you inside over winter are side leg lifts. Another ballet type pose, this can be done nearly anywhere in your home where there is a supporting counter, ledge, table or chair to place your hands on for balance. Stand up straight with good posture, activate the muscles in your leg by lifting up to the side. Make sure to control your movement both up and down. This is also another exercise which focuses on multiple muscle groups. According to MSN it works the, “gluteals, tensor fascia latae, erector spinae, abs, quadriceps.”
These moves can easily be done anywhere in your home rather than braving the cold outside or driving to the gym. Paired with a healthy diet they you will be on your way to losing weight. In addition to weight loss, your body will be much more toned. After the cold winter weather disapears, you will have a headstart on exercising outdoors.
