Looking for the best upcoming movies of December 2010 for celebrating the winter holidays? Well, most of the upcoming movies of December 2010 here aren’t full of holiday cheer, but ’tis the season for Oscar-worthy movies, so be sure to check these out:
Best Upcoming Movies of December 2010 – Release Date of December 3rd
Black Swan – This is definitely one of the most anticipated upcoming movies of December 2010, thanks to all the buzz being created about a certain scene featuring stars Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman. However, the man that brought us ‘Requiem for a Dream’, ‘Pi’, ‘The Fountain’, and ‘The Wrestler’ surely has more to offer here than a little bit of sex. So will this bizarre ballet drama wow audiences, or will they find it a little too weird? I for one hope that Darren Aronofsky has delved into the deep end for this one, and I’m definitely expecting to see Natalie Portman as a potential Oscar contender for her portrayal of a prima ballerina entangled in a potentially dangerous friendship.

The Tourist – Sigh. It’s getting tiring seeing Angelina Jolie play the same character in every movie she’s been in lately: a sexy and mysterious spy that could be good or evil, but usually ends up being a bit of both (I guess since it is the role that won her Brad Pitt, it’s just hard to let it go). But since she’s partnered with Johnny Depp in this flick about a tourist that finds himself tangled up with an Interpol agent in a precarious position, I would say this is one of the upcoming movies of December 2010 that’s worth watching for the eye candy alone (and it does at least look more entertaining than ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’).
The Company Men – This is one of the upcoming movies of December 2010 with a plot that doesn’t sound all that promising: three businessmen lose their jobs and have to figure out what to do with their lives. However, it could turn into an enjoyable character-driven film with stars Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, and Tommy Lee Jones carrying it, and the subject matter will definitely hit home for many Americans today. It has the potential to be this year’s ‘Up in the Air’, and I’d expect that some involved with it will be walking on air come Oscar time.
The Fighter – Fighting movies seem to have more than a fighting chance around Oscar time (see: ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Millionaire Dollar Baby’; make an exception for ‘Raging Bull’), so I would expect to see this one starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo rack up its fair share of nominations. It’s one of the many upcoming movies of December 2010 that will sink or swim based on the performances, being a storyline we’ve seen time and time again, but I think we’ll see this look at the life of boxer Micky Ward float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
Best Upcoming Movies of December 2010 – Release Date of December 17th
Casino Jack – Kevin Spacey is one of the many men of the upcoming movies of December 2010 going for Oscar gold by portraying a real-life person. Here he’ll be transforming into wheeler and dealer Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist whose downfall has already been a spectacle for Americans through the media. No word on if the movie will portray Abramoff playing pizza guy near the end, but if it does, capturing the essence of the down-on-his-luck guy turning to the fast food biz should be a breeze for Spacey (and it will also be interesting to see how Abramoff, fresh out of the halfway house, feels about his portrayal).
TRON: Legacy – Not all of the best upcoming movies of December 2010 are Oscar fodder. I don’t expect Jeff Bridges will be getting ‘Crazy Heart’ reviews for his performance here, seeing as how everyone in this movie (except maybe Olivia Wilde) is going to be overshadowed by the special effects (which include taking years off of Jeff Bridges’ appearance). I just wonder if TRON guy is making himself a modernized TRON: Legacy suit for opening day?
Best Upcoming Movies of December 2010 – Release Date of December 22nd
True Grit – But could Jeff Bridges get Oscar buzz in another of the upcoming movies of December 2010? Having the Dude step into the Duke’s iconic boots is definitely a bold move by the Coens, and it’s hard not to wish they weren’t spending their energy on something original. However, it’s also hard not to be curious to see the Coens’ take on cowboy Cogburn, so this one is still going to fall under the category of must-see December movies.
The Illusionist – This animated film by the director of ‘The Triplets of Bellville’ is one of the upcoming movies of December 2010 that I’m most looking forward to, thanks in part to Chomet’s colorful animation eye candy and the fact that the screenplay here was written by none other than Jacques Tati, who died before he could make a live-action version of the movie. Chomet has definitely already proved that he can capture a touch of Hulot’s hilarious world in ‘Triplets’, so I’m really expecting big things (including a best animated feature Oscar nomination) from this look at the life of a magician whose star is fading as the days of vaudeville come to an end.
Country Strong – Okay, so this movie has got one heck of a goofy title, but Gwyneth Paltrow is in it to win it with her country singing (she’s already showing off her newfound talent on ‘Glee’ and at the CMA’s). It seems a bit like a watered-down version of ‘Crazy Heart’ with a female lead, but could be worth watching for Gwyneth’s unlikely transformation.
Best Upcoming Movies of December 2010 – Release Date of December 31st
Blue Valentine – And here’s one of the upcoming movies of December 2010 that’s stirring up a bit of controversy, thanks to the MPAA giving it a NC-17 rating despite reports stating that it’s no worse than most rated R flicks. Basically the movie is just about the journey of a couple (Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling), with the audience becoming voyeurs of the most intimate moments of their crumbling relationship. It’s definitely not a new premise, but the performances could have this NC-17 movie rocking Oscar’s world.
So whether you’re looking for fun holiday flicks, artsy Oscar contenders, or movies to help you battle the holiday blues, there’s sure to be some upcoming movies of December 2010 here to help you temporarily escape from the hectic holiday season.
