Someone great once said that in life only two things are certain. Those things are taxes and death. Tax season will quickly be approaching us once again and I wanted to give some insight on the best programs that I have used and hopefully help someone make a informed decision on what may work for them.
Turbo Tax has been around for quite sometime and is the big daddy to online filing. I have found their interview based system very easy to use. Completing a simple federal 1040 form and a state return can be done in less than a hour. Pricing ranges from $29.95 all the way up to $129.95 depending on your situation. They can be found online at www.turbotax.intuit.com
TaxAct has also been a personal favorite of mine as they have a free package that seems to fit most peoples needs. If you have a more complex return the fee for their services is very reasonable and you can often prepare and file your federal and state taxes for under $20.00. They are currently running a special where you can receive free phone support if you start your taxes before the end of 2010. You can find them online at www.taxact.com
TaxSlayer is becoming fierce competition as far as pricing goes. You can file a more complex federal tax return for the low price of $9.95. They also have interview based software and by anwsering simple questions that are in laymans terms, you can do a small business tax return in less time than it takes to go see a movie. Their website is www.taxslayer.com
H&R Block is the biggest tax preparation company in the United States. It is only fitting that they have all of the same services that they can do in their offices online. I have found that their calculators are always accurate and that the assistance they can provide if you get stuck doing a return is top notch. Pricing is very competitive and you do save much more by doing them yourself as oppsed to going into a office. Their website is www.hrblock.com
Liberty Tax has been slowly gaining popularity with their eSmartTax program. Again this is a company that also has brick and mortar locations and is the third largest in the nation when it comes to tax preparation. I like the fact that the returns are covered with their audit assistance programs. The software is easy to manipulate and populates various tips to help save money as well as to ensure the biggest return possible. They can be found at www.libertytax.com
