Another year gone by and the little ones are older by a year. They have soaked in new books, cool games, made friends, and went to lots of events and birthdays. Though I won’t be recalling every moment, an imprint has been formed in a child’s mind about their identity and life. Sounds scary for a parent. Did I teach them the right values? Was I always present at their every event? How will they judge me as a parent both in the present and in retrospect years later?
I use these constant reminders as I set my New Year’s resolutions.
I have vowed that next year, I will spend more time reading to them. Since I have a library card to the San Jose Public Library ( http://www.sjlibrary.org/), I will spend more time with the Tumble Book Online Library if I cannot make time to check out new books. Tumble Book Library (http://www.tumblebooks.com/library/asp/customer_login.asp?accessdenied=/library/asp/home_tumblebooks.asp) is an online collection of animated, talking picture books aimed at young children to enhance their reading skills.
My next resolution is to encourage more outdoor activities for my kids and decrease the amount of time they spend in front of the television and playing video games. Here is a great list of parks in Mountain View : http://www.ci.mtnview.ca.us/city_hall/comm_services/parks_and_trails/city_parks.asp My kids love the Cuesta Park , but I have discovered many new hiking trails and local parks we have yet to visit.
My third resolution is encouraging my kids to enjoy more athletics and stay fit. A membership to the Little Gym (http://www.thelittlegym.com/Pages/default.aspx), TaeKwonKids (http://www.taekwonkids.net/), dance lessons at Dance Academy (http://www.danceacademyusa.com/) , or swimming lessons at YMCA (www.ymca.net) are a great way to encourage kids to develop an interest in fitness.
Music and Arts
My fourth resolution is encouraging my kids to enjoy music and the arts. Diane Kwan Music School (www.KwanMusic.com) offers variety music lessons for children starting as young as age 5. Instructor Diane Kwan has over 15 years experience working with kids with private piano lessons, violin or string instruments to also teaching various clay pottery classes.
Last, but not least, have lots and lots of fun!! That’s means more trips to Great Jump Sports (http://www.greatjumpsports.com/) in Milpitas where massive indoor trampolines allow bouncing off the walls! Bounce-ARama (http://bounce-a-rama.com/bouncepark.html) is another great bounce park. Finally, you can make up for all lost times at California ‘s Great America in Santa Clara (http://cagreatamerica.com/) where they will love a visit from Dora or Diego, take a train ride at KidsVille, or enjoy Planet Snoopy.
When it comes to building precious memories, it’s not the quantity of time that matters. It’s the quality time that forms lasting impressions on their young, curious minds.
