For your New Year’s Eve celebration this year why not try a Champagne alternative, sparkling wine. Sparkling wine comes in a bounty of flavors and is much easier on your wallet. In fact Sparkling Wines have become progressively popular at holiday gatherings and is surpassing the traditional New Year’s Champagne toast. I have compiled a list of my favorites, I hope you will give at least one a try.
Don’t let the name scare you away, Bitch Bubbly has hints of raspberry and strawberry and goes done smooth as silk. It is a sparkling Grenache that comes from Australia and is crimson in color. You can purchase a bottle at your local liquor store for around $12 per bottle. I first tried this wine at my boss’s Christmas Gala and I was immediately tickled. It is sweet and light and actually gave me a burst of energy. If you are throwing a New Year’s Eve Extravaganza there is no need to stress
Prosecco is a sparkling wine that is made from Prosecco grapes that are only grown in the Veneto region of Italy. You may know Prosecco from the popular cocktail the Bellini. Prosecco is used in the making of the Bellini. It is a very dry white with a strong salty after taste. There are various brands of Prosecco one of my favorites is the Dolce Vita Prosecco which usually runs about $14 per bottle. I like Prosecco for it’s almost bitter burst going down, it just feels like a grown up drink.
This is my mother’s favorite drink of choice for ringing in the new year. If my mom does not have a bottle or 2 or 3 by mid December you best stay out of her way; or better yet send her a bottle. Asti Spumante is Italy’s second most produced wine. This is a very sweet wine with a pale yellowish color. It is best served with fruity desserts like, apple pie or blueberries. The best way to serve Asti Spumante is chilled in a long flute glass to get the full effect of the bubbles. You can get a bottle for under $20.
Korbel Sparkling Wine Brut
This is an interesting sparkling wine. Although Korbel Brut is sweet with intense fruity spices going in in the finish. You can usually snag a bottle for under $10. This little sparkling champ goes great with exotic spices like curry or cumin. It is an excellent partner for chicken dishes and creamy desserts. My dad actuallu served this at his New Year’s Eve party last year and it went over quite well with the guests.
Mumm Napa Brut Rose
This is a sparkling Rose made from Pinot grapes. Mumm is a very lush wine with bold notes of cherry and hints of vanilla. The spectacular element with this wine is the fact that you can pair it with almost any kind of meal or dessert. So if you are planning to have a full course meal with decadent cakes and cookies for your New Year’s Eve Bash you should probably order yourself a case. One bottle of the Mumm Napa Brut will run you about $20.
