Will Ferrell is on my short list of favorite actors. He’s funny, but once in awhile manages to showcase that he might feel a deep emotion. Oh, and he sings and he’s not bad at it. These are the five best film performances of Will Ferrell.
5. Harold Click – Stranger than Fiction
Will Ferrell was very unlike Will Ferrell in the 2006 movie, Stranger than Fiction. Yes, there were moments where he hammed it up as he does in almost all of his movies, but this movie made me feel sadness, too. Harold Click had to deal with the fact he was going to die for the betterment of literature. That in itself is twisted. What I liked about Will Ferrell’s performance in this movie was that he didn’t resort to antics to win the girl, he was a fairly quiet guy, and he was just so genuine in everything he did. Harold Click was not a man-child, but a man, and it’s the type of role I’d like to see Will Ferrell in more often – but not too often.
4. Frank Ricard – Old School
There can not be a top Will Ferrell list in existence without including Frank from Old School. Frank was crazy, wild, and got into shenanigans. He was over the top, and found a way to be even more outlandish than that at times. This is also arguably the movie that boosted Will Ferrell’s popularity and made him a star, and set the bar high for his loud-mouthed man-child moments in the future. Frank kidnapping a pledge and acting postal, but then saying “I’m just kidding” is the moment that has always stuck with me.
3. Buddy the Elf – Elf
Elf has covertly become a holiday classic, and it’s all because of Will Ferrell. The sweet Buddy just wants to forge a relationship with his dad, impress a girl, and save Christmas. Poor Buddy didn’t fit in as an elf, but his big heart and sweet nature made it nearly impossible for him to fit in with people, too. However, somehow, Buddy made it work, and Will Ferrell charmed his way into our hearts – and continues to do so every holiday season.
2. Ron Burgandy – Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy
If Old School hadn’t converted you to the hilarious ways of Will Ferrell, then Anchorman did. Ron Burgandy was a perfect caricature of a 70s anchorman, and the ways he tries to impress Veronica are just make me die laughing. Ron Burgandy is the best loud-mouthed man-child character ever, and trying to hide his attraction to Veronica by blaming the pleat in his pants is probably one of the funniest movie moments ever.
1. Magatu – Zoolander
Before Frank Ricard and Ron Burgandy, there was Magatu, the evil fashion designer who used male models to do his bidding. Sure, Will Ferrell as the villain in Zoolander, but it didn’t make him any less spectacular. He was so ridiculous, yet vile. Just thinking of Magatu telling Derek Zoolander to kill the prime minister of Malaysia while Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax plays in the background makes me die of the giggles every single time.
These are the five best Will Ferrell performances. Sure, others can be argued onto the list, but these five really set the bar for Will Ferrell.
