Being the mother of 2 boys, now 18 and 14, has given me many opportunities to buy tween, birthday gifts for them and their friends over the years. I find that they are too old for action figure toys and Pokemon. Board games don’t seem to have quite the same effect on them either. But, you give them cash, gift cards, or anything related to the video game world, and now you’re talking.
I find that money is always a great option. It allows them to pick out their own gift. If there was something they wanted for their birthday, and didn’t receive, this gives them the opportunity to buy it. Or, they could put it in their bank account, and save it for a rainy day. It could then be used to catch a movie with friends, to use for ice cream after school with the guys, or to be used at the batting cages or a video arcade.
Gift cards are an awesome birthday idea for tween boys too. Find out where they like to buy their clothes. Most young men I know like to shop at Hollister, Aeropostale, Abercrombie and Fitch, and American Eagle (www.hollister.com, www.aeropostale.com, www.abercrombieandfitch.com and www.americaneagle.com) . Target gift cards come in handy too (www.target.com). When tween boys are presented with a gift card, they can go to that particular store and buy something they like, or order it on line. So, instead of you picking out a shirt for them at a store they may not be crazy about, ask mom for ideas, and then get them a gift card for that store.
What tween boy doesn’t own a PSP, a Nintendo WII, DS, or Play Station? Anything video game related makes an awesome gift. If you are unsure of which game they may like, a gift card from Game Stop is always a fabulous idea. Video game strategy guides make cool gifts. They can usually be bought for $20. at any book store, or order on line at www.amazon.com. Video game, accessory pieces are a must too. Some of these may include: extra controllers, cases, travel kits, and head pieces.
Fianlly, if you really want to go the extra mile, laser tag, mini golf, bowling, movie, or paint ball gift cards make great options as well. Try an I pod gift card too. These can be bought at Target or Walmart. It allows for the tween boy to download his favorite music, movies, or games.
