While it’s true that many older boys share sports as a common interest, those with Asperger Syndrome are mostly in a class of their own, as they usually have “special interests” that do not include sports, but other hobbies, or obsessions. So at Christmastime, if you’re thinking of what to buy a teenage Aspie boy for his Christmas gift, you might want to consider his “special interest”, in place of a typical teen present. And that may likely be some Star Wars product, as so many of these AS boys (my son included) adore modern science fiction, specifically the most recent Star Wars. They especially love the newer games. Other interests are SpongeBob SquarePants DVD’s, anime, electronic gadgets, and of course, video games for the following systems: PlayStation 3, Wii, and the PC (computer).
“Special Interests” Include Video Games
Video games are extremely popular for any teenage boy, including one with Asperger’s. There are a handful of titles that stand out from the rest and are sure to be a hit for the older boy with High-Functioning Autism.
The New Super Mario Bros.
With that said, to narrow down the choices, let’s start with Super Mario Bros. This will definitely be on the wish list of the “tween” and younger teen set. The new (and improved) Super Mario, that is. It first arrived on the scene about 25 or so years ago, but I’m talking specifically about the most recent games that play on the Nintendo Wii system. The top two new Super Mario games are Mario Kart, and Super Mario Galaxy.
As previously mentioned, the newer Star Wars games are a mega-hit with AS teens. A couple of popular recent titles come to mind. They are Battlefront I and II for the PC, The Clone Wars for Wii, KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) for the PC, and The Force Unleashed for PS3.
The most recent (2010) U.S. version of Monster Hunter ranks pretty high for this particular age group. Currently, it’s available for the Wii. There are two options for playability- as a single player, or with others worldwide via an internet connection, where they can team up and help each other battle monsters.
DVD’s: SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob episodes on DVD are a great choice for inexpensive Christmas gifts, and is popular year after year, as SpongeBob and his gang never get old. There are possibly over a hundred episodes or titles to choose from. This is one show the entire family can enjoy together.
Finally, as you’re shopping for that perfect Christmas present for your favorite Aspie, remember that you can’t go wrong if you keep his special interest in mind. Then on Christmas day, you’ll be glad you did, as you’ll surely brighten his day with your thoughtfulness.
