The Denver Nuggets have often enjoyed great production from the point guard spot. Along with current floor general Chauncey Billups, top point guards Mark Jackson, Allen Iverson, Nick Van Exel, Fat Lever, and Michael Adams have all suited up for Denver. The Nuggets’ all-time assist leaders include three great point guards and a pair of Hall of Fame forwards.
5. Dan Issel: 2,005 assists
Hall of Fame big man Dan Issel ranks fifth on the Denver Nuggets’ all-time assist leaders list. After establishing himself as a perennial All-Star and a champion with the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA, Issel headed west for Denver in 1975 and gave the Nuggets ten terrific seasons. Issel was a scorer first and a passer second with career averages of 22.6 points and 2.4 assists per game. Nevertheless, his longevity with the Nuggets (802 games played, second most in team history) helped him climb their leader boards in just about every category. He is also the Nuggets’ all-time leading rebounder with 6,630 boards.
4. Nick Van Exel: 2,047 assists
Former All-Star point guard Nick Van Exel ranks fourth on the list of Denver Nuggets’ all-time assist leaders. With the Nuggets, Van Exel played what were arguably the four best seasons of his career from 1999 to 2002. In 245 games with Denver, Van Exel averaged 17.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game. He notched his career-high of 9.0 assists per game in 1999-00 to rank second in the NBA. His 5,777 career assists are good for the 32nd highest total in league history.
3. Michael Adams: 2,181 assists
One-time All-Star point guard Michael Adams is third among the Denver Nuggets’ all-time assist leaders. Adams had a solid 11-year career from 1985 to 1996 with one stellar season coming during his four-year stint in Denver. In the 1990-91 campaign, Adams set career highs with 26.5 points and 10.5 assists per game; he held the team’s single-season record for assists per game until 1996-97 when Mark Jackson dished out 12.3 per contest.
2. Fat Lever: 3,566 assists
Fat Lever was a two-time All-Star point guard and the second highest assist leader in Denver Nuggets’ history. Lever manned the point in Denver from 1984 to 1990 and he averaged more than seven assists per game in five of his six campaigns there. He was one of the most well-rounded point guards of the 1980s and he averaged 17.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in 474 games with the Nuggets. He also remains the Nuggets’ all-time steals leader with 1,167.
1. Alex English: 3,679 assists
The Denver Nuggets’ all-time assists leader is Hall of Fame small forward Alex English. English was Denver’s franchise player for 11 seasons from 1980 to 1990. He was named an All-Star eight times as he was always among the NBA’s points leaders, even winning a scoring title in 1982-83. He averaged five-plus assists per game three times from the forward position as the greatest player in the history of the franchise. English ranks in the Nuggets’ all-time top five in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
