The Memphis Grizzlies may be the least successful NBA franchise, but it’s not due to a lack of great point guard play. The Grizzlies have enjoyed the work of star play-makers like Mike Bibby and Jason Williams while current point guard Mike Conley is developing into a good distributor and a potential future All-Star. Bibby, Williams, and Conley headline the Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leaders.
5. Mike Conley: 1,100 assists*
Current point guard Mike Conley is up to fifth on the list of Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leaders. The Grizzlies used their first round pick in the 2007 draft on Conley and he quickly became their starting point guard. In his first three seasons, he has slowly but steadily increased his assist average which reached 5.3 per game in 2009-10. Off to a hot start in the 2010-11 campaign, Conley is in the midst of a breakout year that could propel him to the top of the team’s record books in short order.
4. Mike Miller: 1,221 assists
Great shooting swingman Mike Miller ranks fourth among the Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leaders. Miller spent a six-year stint with the Grizzlies from 2003 to 2008 with averages of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Miller’s career year came in 2006-07 when he averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. In addition to assists, Miller is the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in three-point baskets.
3. Pau Gasol: 1,473 assists
Three-time All-Star power forward Pau Gasol is third on the list of Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leaders. Memphis acquired Gasol on draft night 2001 and he instantly became their franchise player. Gasol played 476 games for Memphis, more than any other player, and he remains the Grizzlies’ all-time leading scorer with 8,966 points. He averaged 18.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.8 blocks for Memphis from 2001 to 2008. He notched a career-high 4.6 assists per game in 2005-06.
2. Mike Bibby: 1,675 assists
Point guard Mike Bibby started his career with the Grizzlies in 1999 and he remains second on the list of Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leaders. In three seasons with the then Vancouver Grizzlies, Bibby averaged 7.8 assists per game, the highest career assist average in franchise history. Bibby holds the Grizzlies’ two highest single-season assist totals with 685 in 2000-01 and 665 in 1999-00. Now with the Hawks, his 5,199 assists are the fifth most among active players.
1. Jason Williams: 2,041 assists
The Memphis Grizzlies’ all-time assist leader is the team’s longest-tenured point guard, Jason Williams. From 2001 to 2005, Williams played 284 games as the Grizzlies’ floor general. Williams averaged 8.0 assists in his first season in Memphis and he followed it with a career best 8.3 per game in 2002-03. Now with Orlando, he has a career average of 6.0 assists in 764 games. He is ninth among active players with 4,563 total assists.
