If you are a sports fan, there are obviously certain times of the year that are extremely special to you. There are regular sporting events, and then there are the “major” sporting events. These are the types of events that cause you to change all of your plans, just so you can be home to watch. Keep in mind, this list is based upon the importance to the average sports fan all over the world.
Top Four Sports Events
4. College Basketball March Madness
If this were simply my list, I would have March Madness much higher than number four. March Madness attracts people who aren’t interested in sports the rest of the year because of the March Madness bracket pools. The excitement that carries on for a couple weeks is always amazing, as every team and every player is giving it their best effort each game. The fact that there is always a Cinderella team is terrific too. College basketball’s regular season may not rank this high, but the NCAA Tournament is a whole different animal!
3. FIFA World Cup
While it isn’t that huge in the United States, the World Cup is extremely popular throughout much of the world. In many countries it is as if normal life stops while the World Cup is taking place. If you watched the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, you can tell that there is absolutely no shortage of passion from the fans for this sporting event. In South America as well as much of Europe this would rank as the top sporting event.
2. The Olympics
There is nothing quite like the Olympics. Why do the Olympics deserve to be ranked this high? Every single country in the world is interested in the Olympics. The summer games are certainly more popular than the winter games, but the opportunity to cheer on athletes from your country against the best in the world is precious. The Olympic Games are a great two weeks of athletes coming together and competing for the most prestigious prize in sports, the gold medal.
1. The Super Bowl
It’s hard to not put the Super Bowl at number one, especially for anyone who lives in the United States. The Super Bowl is the most watched television show in the United States every single year, and don’t think that people in other countries don’t care. The NFL has built up a terrific brand name, and sports fans absolutely go nuts over this event every single year. The price that advertisers pay to get viewers eyes during the Super Bowl tells you all you need to know about the popularity of this event.
